Just saw a Facebook post from a gym owner stating in no uncertain terms the gym's policy about social media, re-posting vulgar language etc. Also included in the post is the warning that if the gym's athletes post twerk videos on vine, that they're risking removal from the program.

I understand how I feel about the whole twerk thing, as a parent, but I also know that Elvis and The Twist were considered completely inappropriate and sexually explicit, back in the day.

Is the gym's policy over-the-top or on point?

Right on point, IMO. Yes it's hardcore but they are being upfront about it. If parents have an issue, they can leave.

Having a policy like this is necessary because they really can't pick and choose what's off limits. Can you imagine if they subjectively said "Too sleazy, you can't post that" or "that one didn't cross the line, so it's ok"?

While I am not a parent, I believe twerking is inappropriate; especially for younger children. On vine/instagram I've seen kids as young as 9 posting videos of themselves twerking. I don't necessarily agree with the gym threatening removal, but perhaps a talking to about image? The kids reflect on the gym, and many people find the dance inappropriate. Perhaps the gym could go about it another way.

On-point. Twerking is unclassy and makes your gym look bad. And half of the twerk videos that exist are in bikinis or booty shorts. Little kids should NOT be twerking... its inappropriate and theyre trying to be like the big kids, and the big kids arent being good role models. So everyone needs to stop posting them. Especially the ones i see in practicewear/uniform. i dont think id kick someone off for it in normal clothes (although they'd be warned/punished) but in uniform/anything with the gym logo/name would be immediate removal from the team. But they have to be strict about it or else people will fight them on it. Now it's been put out there so everyone knows the rule.

AMEN. There is nothing appropriate about minors doing handstands and bouncing their booty up and down. It's embarrassing and vulgar, but kids are getting caught up in the fad and doing it for "likes" on Vine. I'm glad that a gym owner spoke out about it.

ETA: The gym that forbids it is also known to be one with Christian values. I appreciate that they saw twerking as being something against their ideals and took action.

finally a real twerk thread.:p

also, i agree. i think its on point. even i (a young person) can't get used to the idea of twerking. its just so...unclassy. especially if your posting it online. not a good way to represent your program, cheerlebrity or not.

Or when its individuals in their gym's uniforms or practice wear..... that's the worst kind.

totally on point.

a nearby club had a teen night recently with a "bikini party" and had a twerk contest. consisting of the TEENS nearly naked, in their bikinis, twerking on the bar. it's disturbing and completely inappropriate for everyone (IMO) to be posting everywhere, but especially a group that is specifically under 18. (and for reference, i am not very religious and very liberal about most things, but this crosses the line for me)

also, to everyone who continues posting videos of themselves... just wait until you try to get a job or into grad school and they pull up that video. and trust me, they will.

Sorry, but I just don't get why twerking is considered to be more "trashy" than just about every other type of dance. Shimmying brings direct attention to breasts, which are arguably a more sexual part of the body than someone's rear end, but people are totally willing to accept it as a harmless, lively part of cheer and dance. In fact, just about every body position, dance move, jump, etc. involves *gasp* spreading one's legs. Why are we deciding that twerking deserves more attention than anything else? It just seems to be such an arbitrary distinction.

I'm a college student, and neither I nor anyone I know my age actually sees contemporary twerking as anything more than a fun, versatile dance. There are legitimate concerns about how people present themselves on social media, but I think the uproar over twerking is just an example of people overreacting to something they don't understand when they can't find anything that merits genuine concern.

You're comparing apples and oranges here. Seeing as twerking originated in strip clubs, shimmying and twerking are not one of the same.
Do I have a problem with twerking? No, as I do it with my friends, but then again we're 21 and we don't film it for vine. Do I have a problem with my 9 year old cousin imitating me? Yes. It's just that step too far, especially when it gets a bit stripper pole like. I will say that there's also a few dance sections that I see at comp that I raise an eyebrow at, so it's not like twerking is the only awkward dance out, but it's good that someone's taking a stance and highlighting it as inappropriate.

They will not pull up a vine video of you twerking to deny you admittance into grad school, and they shouldn't do it for a job either. What you do in your personal life IS and ALWAYS should be separate from you work life. They are two completely different things.
