I have been coaching all-star for years and have a couple summers experience as a UCA staff member. Cheer is my passion and I would love to be able to quit my regular job to be able to balance a couple different cheer related careers. Ideally I would love to work with Varisty but jobs are pretty limited with them up in the NW so I figured I would look in to becoming a judge as well.

I've read some of threads from the past years about tips on becoming a judge but I believe stuff has changed with the USASF certifications for judges so I wanted to get updated information. My goal is to become an all-star judge but realize I will probably have to start out judging rec and high school competitions to gain experience.

Is it possible to get certified to be a judge outside of the regional meetings during the summer? Is there an online course that I can take or does it have to be in person? Also, what type of preparation would you suggest to be able to successfully pass the course (aside from memorizing the rules inside and out)?

I would love any input on the process and how to start putting myself out there to start getting experience!

The USASF certification is currently only for safety judges. Event producers train their own scoring judges. This will probably change when the universal score sheet is implemented.

Since you've worked UCA staff I suggest using your contact there to get on some events. Also talk to some of the EPs you compete with to see if they need people at their other events.

Getting safety certified may also help as EPs are looking for more panel judges to be certified.

@Andre thanks, that is good to know! I didn't realize that safety class wasn't required for everyone.
