Then checking isnt necessary for hockey. I think you satisfied your own requirement.

Can a standing double backflip off a trampoline also catch the attention of the crowd? Why not do those instead? I feel like I would notice that more.
You're right... Checking ISNT necessary for hockey. That's the point. Just because it isn't necessary, doesn't mean it doesn't add value. Just like stunts and tumbling in cheerleading.

Not sure your point about the double backflip - are you referencing something that's not allowed because it's dangerous? There are limits in other sports too, for safety reasons, i.e. checking from behind in hockey.

So being able to do backflips is about entertainment NOT supporting a team. Supporting a team is the main reason cheer exists. Backflips serve a purpose outside support?
Even when 'entertaining' the crowd, it's still about supporting the team. It keeps the crowd interested, makes the games more enjoyable, keeps people coming out to support the team.

Yes but those are limits for sports. Are we a sport or not a sport? Do activities need limits? Because we have dangerous skills, aka backflips, do we also need trainers?

Exactly what I was thinking.

If you want to make sideline cheer ground bound for safety, why not make them play flag football?

because football is a sport, covered by insurance with safety guidelines and certified coaches and athletic trainers. when cheerleading is not a sport, it is not covered under those same guidelines, so the safety goes out the window. if it is a sport, it becomes expensive for the school to fund and may get cut.

cheerleader: leads the crowd in cheers at sporting events on the sidelines for the sports team. stunting and tumbling is not required to hold a megaphone and encourage crowd support like cheerleaders traditionally did.

i'd vote for ground bounding all schools and a movement for all star cheerleading to rename itself to something without "cheerleading" in it.

I move for 'a sport or ground bound'.

Yes it is considered a sport by my school I coach at and hence we are funded as such.

yes, i agree, and that is what i meant - in the states it is not considered a sport with real rules and regulations to keep athletes safe, it should be ground bound.

Well, I believe it's a sport, but even if it's not, some activities need limits for safety. The chemistry club requires goggles and safe practices around chemicals.

Do you agree or disagree with the original article?

But sometimes the cheerleaders are more distracting. For example, a stunt goes up that has NO business going up, but sponsor is trying to impress. Flyer falls flat back on the track. Sponsor and athletic trainer spend time with fallen flyer. EMT's end up backing up the wagon to load fallen flyer. Refs halt game for 20 minutes while this is going on. Some school squads can handle stunts like pros but others shouldn't attempt a thigh stand.

Now I'm trying to think of a "sport" that has another "sport" going on in the same field/floor/rink simultaneously. Drawing a blank.

Gymnastics. Multiple events occur at the same time in the same arena.

Depends on what part we're talking about. If you mean the premise that if cheerleading is made a sport it will cease to exist, or cease to support the teams...or that cheerleading shouldn't be made a sport, no.
