There's lots of inexpensive options too. The elf eyeshadow primer is $1 and stays on for me all day- worked better than urban decay on my skin. Rimmel Kate Moss collection red lipsticks are great- put a layer on, blot and dust with translucent powder, apply another layer. NYX stay matte setting spray is ace, and also their jumbo crayons and baked eyeshadows (applied over primer) have great pigments. All available from Target!

I tried some NYX pigments and I wasn't happy with it at all :( It broke my heart because they have a brilliant bright purple whose color would have been perfect with CPs pale coloring. Maybe I should play with it more.

I do like their setting spray and white eyeliner.

Some colours and types of shadow are hit and miss, but I find that with expensive brands too. The biggest difference I found was applying primer and the quality of brushes used to apply product- and using enough product! Some colours really take time to build up where others are just slap it on and run. I've found jumbo pencils over primer, and then matched with complementary shadow are the best for competition stage makeup.

BH cosmetics has crazy inexpensive palettes with lots of different colors. Very pigmented. I always use urban decay primer too.

My daughter has really sensitive skin and we can't control the breakouts and it's even worse during comp season. Do any of y'all have any recommendations for what to use on her skin as a base since she has gym mandated makeup which really breaks her out. I have used some of the foundations and powders that are supposed to be helpful for acne, but they seem to make it worse :( Thanks :)

I fortunately never had any problems with my make-up for cheerleading, but I was able to choose my own.
BUT I had huge problems with the theater stage make-up. What seemed to help me:
- take extra good care of your skin in the days leading up to the event, and the days after (I wouldn't wear any make-up outside of the theater during those times and use face masks a lot more than usually)
- watch what you eat - it will make a huge difference
- apply make-up as late as possible, and take it off as early as possible
- when you are done removing the make-up, pretend you didn't and go through a second cycle
- I would always use the basic Nivea cream for my face right before I got the make-up applied.
- wash the brushes and sponges that you use for make-up on a regular basis

Those are more general tips, but I hope that they already help. Others can probably help you with specific brand names for make-up

I would talk to your gym's coaches and owners about it. If the products they give you are what is causing an issue, and you can find another product that delivers a similar look but no skin issues, there really shouldn't be a problem for swapping out the face makeup she uses.

I also recommend taking care of your skin and treating it like a baby the week of a competition. Gentle face wash morning and night, toner, and moisturizer every day. Using just a makeup wipe on skin leaves the makeup remover on your face and can cause more breakouts.

Thanks! We've stepped up her regimen at home- the acne is just horrible. Thankfully she doesn't wear makeup at all except for competitions and mascara and lipstick for practice. Pray for me as I try this with her as she is 13 and knows everything and I am a mean old mommy that "doesn't let her be her and I'm completely embarrassed by her appearance etc.." lol

Have you taken her to a dermatologist to see what they recommend? CP is only 11, but has always had problem skin. The makeup we use at the gym irritates her skin and causes excema and some pimples. We use a good quality hypoallergenic primer under everything, including eye shadow and it helps a lot. We use smashbox, but you will have to try some to see what works. Also, what we were taking the makeup off with was part of the problem. If I use any kind of makeup remover on CP's skin she has to wash well with lots of water immediately after or its excema city!

Cp is 14 and has sensitive skin that gets irritated and breaks out easily too. Getting that makeup off right after the competition is finished and using her prescribed skin medication is always a priority for her and that seems to help.

Youngest cp struggled with this for two years until her hormones settled down, still not great, but much better. The OTC products would make her skin peel, but then it would still be extremely oily. If you go to the dermatologist, ask for samples first to make sure her skin responds, we pay almost $250 for 2 scripts (Evoclin and Differin), with insurance, and I guess some drug plans won't cover them at all (we renew scripts every 6-8 months). Dr. has her carry facial wipes in her backpack to get the oil off her face throughout the day. Also, told her to put a wide tooth comb in the shower and to comb through the hair while rinsing to make sure all of the conditioner is out, then wash face and back, and to pull hair away from the face as much as possible. It's hard, but try to look beyond the surface imperfections and point out the positive, the better the self esteem, the better they take care of themselves.

For taking off makeup, try a cleansing oil. It breaks up the makeup and cleans the skin better than most makeup removers I've used(I use a cleansing oil from Garnier that you can find at most drugstores). Even though it says oil, it doesn't leave you feeling greasy and it's never broken me out. I have very sensitive combo skin (very oily T zone and my cheeks get very dry) so I would give it a try!

I've struggled with acne for about 10 years now. I tried every OTC imaginable and multiple prescription medications. One thing I discovered recently was a tinted BB cream. I started using it as a daily moisturizer but it still gives me great coverage so I've stopped using foundation entirely and use only the BB cream. It's made a whirlwind of a difference!
