I love reading and thought it would be a great idea to post book recommendations and have discussions about recent reads etc. I think a lot of other Fierceboarders are novel enthusiasts as well.

What is your all time favorite book? What are some good recommendations for holiday travel, etc? What is the most recent book you read and what did you think about it?

I don't know if I could pick an all-time fave book, but I can share a current fave. The Ocean at the End of the Lane, by Neil Gaiman. Truly a joy to read (I actually listened to the audio book twice in a week). I'd like to listen to it again right now. I'm not sure why I loved it so much, it was such a reflective read for me. Anyway, I like books. :)

Eta: I'm fangirling pretty hard right now because Neil Gaiman retweeted me this week. That's exactly how nerdy I am. Hehe!

I love Neil Gaiman, "Neverwhere" is one of my favorite books. I will have to add "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" to my book list (its a very long list). I'm in the middle of American Gods right now.

I'm fairly sure I've read all of his novels at this point. I started, back when my kids were homeschooled, with The Graveyard Book and then my bookclub picked Oceans earlier this year. I loved it so much that I started on the rest of them. Oceans is just brilliant. Like, I don't have any tattoos and never considered one, but now I literally can't decide which piece of wisdom from that book I want permanently on my body. Haha!

Yes, I love you for starting this thread @CheerTeamNerd

My favorite book ever (or books really) is easily the Harry Potter series. Easily. I just love them. The books are just so magical - figuratively and literally. While the movies are a fair adaptation to the books, the movies just don't do them justice.

I haven't read any books in a while because I can't get into it. I blame college and how much I hated reading for my classes. I'm hoping I can get back into it soon. My "Books I Have Sitting In My Room That I Still Need To Read" list consists of:

-The Power of Six & The Rise of Nine by Pittacus Lore (Part of the "I Am Number Four" series)
- The Kite Runner
- Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
- The Da Vinci Code
- Miss Peregrines Home For Peculiar Children & Hollow City by Ransom Riggs
- Allegiant (Half Read)
- World War Z (Half Read)
- The Kill Order (The Prequel to The Maze Runner) (Half Read)
- Classic "Childrens" Books (Peter Pan, The Secret Garden, Treasure Island)
- Some no name books that I wont bore you with

I am so over these dystopian society books and I'm trying to branch out into other types but they're everywhere. Although I want to finish the series I've started just to finish it... even if I can't stand them anymore. My list of books I still want to read is like a mile long so I won't go into that.

My new favorite thing is to go to the thrift store and buy books. You can get books for so cheap and some of them are in such good condition! This past weekend I bought Lisley's Story by Stephen King (Hardcover), The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne (Hardcover), Pirate's Landing by Michael Crichton (Hardcover), a paperback non fiction book called "Junk Science" by Dan Agin, Ph. D, and the sixth Harry Potter book (Hardcover). (I'm trying to start my own collection of the HP series as the ones in my house were all read by my mom, brother, and me and are not-so-gently loved.) All those books were nearly new looking and got them all for $10! And also I found a 300 page, never been used Harry Potter coloring book for like 80 cents so how could I not pick that up? Even though I'm 22 :p

Actually, Harry Potter books are probably my all-time faves. As a whole series, though. I'm...not 22. Lol!

Eta: ya'll might be too young to fully appreciate The Ocean at the End of the Lane. If you read it and don't get the feels, put it away and try again in 20 years. ;)

Isn't there already a really long book recc thread? I would link it but I'm on my phone. ( also I'm only mentioning it because it's a really good thread with a lot of good suggestions....not because I'm one of those people that shakes their finger every time someone repeats a topic )

I kind of tried to search for one but didn't get very far. I would love to see the old thread, I am always looking for good book suggestions. I love reading in general, but i desperately need some good reads to get me through the holidays at my parents house this year..

I looked using the keyword "book" and found nothing but this thread and some posts in the random sections. But when I searched for the word "dystopian" I found these:

Beach Reads 2013

Books

Summer Reading

So weird. Honestly you wouldn't have found those threads unless you typed in "dystopian" and why would you have used that word? :p

Fierceboard search, get it together.

First off "The Kite Runner" and "World War Z" I thought were both awesome. The World War Z Book (IMO) is sooo much better and more interesting than the movie.

I am also halfway through "Allegiant", i had really liked "Divergent" and then got so bored with the series as it progressed. I thought it had good potential as a post-apocolyptic/dystopian society novel/series and it completely fell flat. I might not finish it (which I NEVER do, no matter how awful a book is I feel obligated to get though it)

I'm on a bit of a Stephen King kick! I'm just finishing "Carrie" and "Under The Dome" is next on my list.

I met Veronica Roth a two weeks ago at YA Festival I volunteered at (and Rainbow Rowell, and Ellen Hopkins and a bunch of other popular YA authors). Unfortunately I don't like the the Divergent series and therefore didn't read past Divergent.... I didn't tell her that though....not that she'd care.

I meant to ask if anyone wanted any books signed but I forgot.

Right now I'm reading Shopaholic to the Stars... I love the Shopaholic series but this one is total crap and its evident that Sophie Kinsella is running out of ideas...and this should truly be the last of the series.

I loved the first 2 Shopaholic books. So funny. So stressful to read. Lol!

My all time favourite book is Speak.
I like the Divergent series, I still think it has one of the worst endings ever though.
The Stephanie Plum books are fantastic, definitely 18+
I have a "booket list" (a bucket list of books) and on it I have all of the old classics, Pride and Prejudice, A Tale of Two Cities, etc. and the Harry Potter books.

@Eyes On The Prize I love going to thrift stores for books too! They're all $.50 - $2.50 it's great! And you can get really cool special editions that aren't in regular stores.

After Shopaholic and Baby they've pretty much just gone down hill.

If you don't already, you should also go to the Friends of the Library book sales for your local library systems. In the case of the library system where I work (until this Friday!!!) people always donate some unique and interesting books, new titles, dvd, and cds etc... and by shopping at the FOL books sale all (in the case of where I work) of the proceeds go back to the library system for programming!

I'm switching library systems in two weeks and I shopped the FOL for my new system and was able to find a lot of Babysitter's Club books for my niece.... I'm trying to collect the entire series for my niece and/or future daughter. I originally had the whole series but they burned in a house fire. Sad day.
