Hey now, I studied abroad at 19/20. :p My first 'alone' flight was at 19. My boyfriend's parents are super rich and paid for my plane ticket to meet them in Rome/Capri for my birthday. My flight was fine, but I waited over an hour at the luggage thing before I realized they left my luggage in NYC. The 'international' phone the woman from Verizon sent me was accidentally authorized for domestic use only so I had no way to call. So I had to borrow the Customer Service people's phone to tearfully call my boyfriend's mother who by this time (about 1 1/2hr later) was in a blind panic. Their yacht Captain was former Australian Special Ops and spoke to the CS Rep: I've never seen a person go so pale so quickly. The man who was hired to drive me to the dock was freaking out when I finally left security (without my luggage which ended up being a week behind for a 10-11 day trip), because he thought I left without him in another car or was kidnapped.

20 was fine, although I did spend 2 days alone in Paris, and my dad thought I was going to end up like Hostel or Taken. I would text my Irish boyfriend who would email my parents every step of the way lol.

The movie Taken ruined trips abroad for many teenagers including mine.

For me, it was the Amanda Knox trial. Guilty or no, that was frightening. I'd rather keep the people I love in a country with a legal system that I (mostly) understand.

Although, our high school cheerleaders travel as a team to nationals, so I'm going to probably have to get used to the idea of her flying without me. We've never had an occasion that required it previously.

My best friend likes to travel the world by herself. Well, she starts off by herself and then finds random people at hostels to travel with. She's a 22 year old blonde haired, blue eyed, American girl and also sometimes very naïve. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if she ends up missing one day. I mean, I'd be extremely upset, but not surprised. Mainly because those movies show how easy it is to get kidnapped and she puts herself in those situations all the time.

The only time either one of my kids have flown without me is when they went on the 8th grade DC trip. I wasn't nervous because they were with teachers who had done this trip for several years.

Yes that doesn't help either! When I graduated high school (1985 ugh) the ultimate gift many friends received was a flight to Europe, a Eurail pass, and spending money to "backpack" around Europe. I didn't get to go because I was lucky that my family could even afford college. I'd like to think I would send my daughter on something similar if she wanted it but I would be terrified the whole time.

I need to hang out wherever you met your boyfriend.

He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a little over a year ago. It has been a challenge for him to adjust to this "new normal" for him and even more so for his father. Honestly my husband is so fearful that some medical catastrophe will strike his boy that if it were up to him I don't think he would even allow our son to drive himself to school. I would have been ok with my son taking a flight with one of my cheer mom friends from the gym...my husband was just not ok with him traveling without a parent.

Totally feel ya. My mom is the same way and I'm almost 26. I was diagnosed 2 years ago and even though I am well versed in handling my pump, CGM, and all the rest she still gets a bit coocoo when I go away for the weekend or am going on a really long drive to get somewhere. She was very uneasy about me going on a cruise 6 months after I was diagnosed but it ended up working out fine and I didn't have any problems other than doing so many extra shots to cover the cruise food and drinks.

When I was visiting extended family some years ago, one of my uncles made me watch Taken... I'm way too paranoid to be as dumb as the girl in the movie.

I even saw a PSA once talking about how thousands of women had gone to Europe having been promised a career in dance, only to be sold into sex slavery. Scary.

Cheer in Missouri is an "activity" so we can have practices in summer, but we have "dead week" (no contact period) with the rest of the activities the first week of July... And compete the second/third week of July, so that's awesome. MSHSAA refuses to let us have the sports dead period (last week of July/first week of August) and MCCA refuses to move the regional competition to a logical time, like I don't know, during the school year??? It's the worst. But if we were a sport, MSHSAA says you can't participate on an all star team during your school team's season and theyre very serious, so I guess it's for the best...
Can you tell how much I love this state?

My sophomore year (2009) regionals was in the middle of August and there was no dead week for cheer so we practiced every weekday from 7-11 [emoji19] and if you were late, by the time you got there our coach had already put an alternate into your spots so she definitely meant business haha. But state was in the middle of November. Then my junior year was when regionals got moved to the end of July and there was a dead week the week before regionals that year I think. We had a break from regionals until school started and then I think state was in October that year but I might be wrong about State.

Missouri high school cheer does some seriously dumb things.

Leave this thread for a couple of days, come back and there are discussions about hijacking, the plot of Taken, and serial killers.

I'll add my teenage travel story though. When I was 13 I was staying in Italy and the host daughter and her friends took a few of us out for the evening. My mom texted me from the US at about 2am asking how I was, and got the response "I'm at a dive bar called the Jolly Roger!" She was surprisingly calm.
