Remember Anastasia Grishina from Russia in London 2012? Very beautiful gymnasts with lots of potential. Well a terrible terrible thing came into russian media about her family and how they stole all her money she earned with gymnastic from her.

I am copying this from tumblr where someone translated the news from the newspaper in Russia.

Nastya was underage when, after the Olympics, she received a car and prize money, so she trusted her mother with it. She had a lot of trouble with getting her mother to give her money for an apartment after getting married and having a child, and it was then when she finally found out the big amunt of money she had earned as a gymnast (salaries, prize money for competitions, cars), but of that amount, almost nothing was left, as her family had took them all. She finally bought an apartment, but her mother made her buy it in her own name or else she wouldn’t give her money to, under the excuse that this way, her husband can’t claim it, but after several fights with her mother who ended up living with them anyway, she left the apartment and her mother changed the locks. She now has no right to the apartment she bought, nor has any money. Her husband works, but most money go on renting a place and she’s looking for a job despite having an 8 month old baby.
She found out that all these years her family has been living off the money she earned and now that the money’s over, they kicked her out and her family is threatening her to shut up about it. The most heartbreaking part is her saying she knows her family never loved her, but she says she has to do this even if she’ll become even more of an outcast for them, as she needs money to raise her son and to find a place to live.

Her brother also threatened her with a knife and her mother demanded her to return the money spent on food.

Her mother was always big problem in her career as she was always involved in her training, deciding everything for her, incuding how or when she trained. She even traveled with her mother to Olympics and not with the team. And IMO she and her pressure was the reason for Grishina bad performance in London

Not surprising coming out of russia with all the issues they've had over the years. ive also read her mother doesnt work and relies on her and her three brothers as income. Which makes gabby douglas story not the least bit surprising, im sure a lot of olympic athletes have family problems due to fame and money.

So Morgan Hurd completed her first international assignment (she never competed internationally as a Junior) at the Stuttgart World Cup and placed 3rd in individual all-around behind Russia's Angelina Melnikova and Germany's Tabea Alt. She's honestly such a joy to watch; my eyes welled up a little when I watched her floor routine knowing what an amazing future she has ahead as a Senior.

It's so deceiving how powerful she is on floor even with such a petite frame; she really is something special.

Angelina Melnikova

She hit the triple L-turn during podium training, so it's a little disappointing to see that she didn't today.

Tabea Alt

Pauline Schaefer

Eythora Thorsdottir

Missing her usual spark and cleanliness, most likely still shaken from the previous rotation. Her balance beam routine was brutal.

Overall it was a shaky competition for most with mistakes and falls, but it's expected, with it being so early in the season in a post-Olympic year.

Baku World Cup has also been taking place this weekend. Coverage isn't too great at this meet, mostly one or two routines here and there depending on what the local TV wants to cover. Here are a couple of balance beam routines:
Catalina Ponor

Emily Little

Vasiliki Millousi

Oksana Chusovitina

It's nice to see Ponor, Millousi and Chusovitina (their respective ages are 29, 32and 41) still competing, proving that with good health, longevity in this sport for females is not impossible.

Sharing one more video from Stuttgart because of the gem of a skill @0:46 - half twisting side-somi, also known as the Schafer. It's one of those skills that sounds ugly in theory, but when executed correctly looks simply amazing.

OMG. I'm in love with Morgan Hurd's fx. Ugh. Gorgeous choreography that goes so well with the music with the skills to boot. Deceptively powerful and graceful. She reminds me of a young Cheng Fei. Can't wait to see her progress this quad. She's one to watch.

I started paying attention to Morgan Hurd a season or two ago and am so excited she's starting to be noticed. Especially last season, she was such a delight to watch and just radiated joy that is often rare to see in elite gymnasts. Her future is definitely bright.

Ashton's not giving up yet, it seems. I wonder if the new Olympic team set-up makes her more hopeful as a specialist...

Just got back from the London world cup and saw some great things!!

Tabea Alt is just stunning to watch, a well deserved gold medallist.

USA showed up! Victoria was clean and consistent throughout. Whittenburg was incredible, was he close to making the Olympic team? His floor, vault and p bars were all 14+. Missed h bars as he was 2nd to last on, it was late and my mum wanted to go home! He got a 12.3 for his pommel, I'm not a gymnastics expert but I think it was more of a 'play it safe' routine so that he could stay on, it was quite straightforward and not much 'pizzaz/extra'. The crowd loved him.

SO happy I got to watch Oleg compete live! Love him, was definitely Team Verniaiev in the AA final in Rio.

So pleased for our Amy, Brinn and Sam. They put out mostly solid routines and were amazing to watch and Amy got a bronze out of it! I think Amy's 12.00 on beam and the boys' small mistakes on a couple of the apparatus hindered them slightly. But so proud of them and loved being part of a home crowd!

Also Fabien Hambuchen came to watch! He was down on the floor, giving interviews and feedback with the MC so that was an added bonus!
