Hi everyone!

I've been looking into starting my own all star cheer team for a few years now, but I don't have any coaching experience. I used to cheer during my high school years, but had to stop when I was diagnosed with lupus in 2008. I don't really know where to start in regards to coaching. I've been trying to reach out to a few coaches for advice (both high school/college and all star), but haven't really gotten far. Most of them say that they don't allow shadowing (which I completely understand), so I'm not really sure what I can do to gain experience besides studying a bunch of things on the Internet. I live in Greenville, SC and I feel an all star team would be great here. Where should I start to get coaching experience or to get started? Thanks so much in advance!

Cheers and kisses,

Victoria

If you know how to spot tumbling maybe try to start out with tumbling classes and then if that works offer stunt classes maybe If the coaches were okay with it go to open gym somewhere and just try and pick up on a few things

Thank you! I'll give that a try!

I am thinking, why not approach or write to a big gym owner and asked them how to do it... I think these bigname gym owners will not feel intimidated by an upstart business owner and may be willing to give concrete advice...

PS: Please, wait to talk to these gym owners after Worlds or at least, not during competition season!

That was actually my first idea, but I shied away from it because I assumed they'd be busy with Worlds! I'll probably send them an email once everything calms down in the cheer world.

I would suggest working with a recreation program first and get some coaching experience. I would suggest looking at some of the USASF trainings offered for safety etc. Get first aid and CPR certified. Being a cheerleader is not the same as coaching. You will be dealing with people's children and just like in cheer the more positions and skills you have experience in the better cheerleader you are. Well the more training and coaching experience you have the better you look to parents. If you are planning to start a gym I would also look at taking some starting a business class at your local community college. Realize if you plan to do this it isn't a hobby. People will be giving you their money and their child's health and safety so you need to have your act together.

Thank you! That's the kind of advice I was looking for. I'll definitely look into that. I'll contact a few rec teams to see if they could use any help and see if I can get a start there. I'm CPR certified, but I'll look into first aid training. Thank you!

Rec teams can always use help. My kids started with rec and they had moms coaching and junior coach cheerleaders who did a lot of teaching so an adult cheerleader wanting to be a coach would be great. Many recs do just sideline but others do competitive... and if not MAY be interested in starting a competitive team. In our area the rec programs competitive part became so big All Star gyms came to our area and growth really started in the sport. Or Pop Warner even.... I think (may be mistaken but World Cup???? the owners started as Pop Warner coaches). Besides helping the community and honing your coaching skills it will help you make in roads with parents. A good coach creates word of mouth buzz and when you make the leap to starting an All Star program you could have some very supportive parents both financially and more.

Would I have to wait until football season for rec teams? On the city's rec sites, the only youth sports they have up at the moment are soccer, baseball and tennis.

Depends on the city. You may want to google your area and Pop Warner cheer. I did a quick google search based off your location "greenville south carolina recreational cheer" and there were several options coming up with registration starting May 1 for some.

I agree with the comment above. Definitely start coaching a pop warner/rec team before you jump right into all-star. It will give you experience with the kids and most importantly with dealing with parents!

I contacted one and I'm supposed to be meeting the director sometime this week to talk about the volunteer coaching position. Oh my goodness, I'm so freaking nervous!
