Tiny Young Flyers

I've been watching my kid fly - she's tall and lightweight... she's the tallest flyer on the team. I notice that the stunts are just harder with her compared to the smaller flyers. The smaller flyers are more compact and the stunts just seem to execute easier when there's a bigger height difference. My cp is similar in height to her bases and the stunts are just more awkward and difficult to execute. So I get why the smaller flyers are easier to base. I think my cp needs to start working on her arm muscles!

She says that the taller flyers are lighter because they have control of their core and know how to squeeze. The tiny flyers are heavier for the fact they don't have these skills yet.

My daughter says that smallest isn't necessarily easiest, but it definitely makes a difference when both flyers do their job. It's a fact you cannot deny. Just because a flyer is small and young, it doesn't mean they don't have adequate skill. Many do.

This was "Zinger_bebe" last year...not such a bebe anymore - she grew 4-5 inches over the last 18 months. With her very long legs there were a lot of awkward moments in the air. Basing this year was inevitable and although sad, she's known it for a while. She was pretty pumped the other night to hit a high to high (this time as a base). I'm pretty pumped about watching her on stage this season and not wanting to puke ;).

Core strength and body control have nothing to do with age or size. Experience may make a difference, but that holds true for both the flyers and the bases.
As far as doing a disservice to these girls should they cheer in HS and/or college, you are not entirely wrong. But I see these girls making the adjustment because they need to.

Sorry to burst your bubble but I was ready to puke most of the time my cp's flyer went in the air....

I love watching flyers with beautiful lines. Strong technique and beautiful flexibility and body positions. Many of our flyers are young meaning 10-12 but beautiful in the air. They are equally talented tumblers. My child is a base so these are just observations regarding her team. Our Coaches do a great job balancing teams. I'm sure it's tough at times when you have to transition a flyer to another position. We have many who have transitioned and make some of the best bases and back spots.

I really hope they make it a rule reguarding flyers size and age.
It's completely ridiculous that all these very talented girls are being passed over for tiny young girls just because it's easier to base a 4ft 50lb flyer. How bout put a flyer who is height weight proportioned with her base? I feel this is setting them up for failure when it comes to high school and college cheer.
Also being 12 on a level 5 team just because your tiny is ridiculous. Teach your bases how to base normal size flyers. Your teams look ridiculous when all the girls look the same height and weight but then they have a 5 year old looking flyer. Just saying what everyone else is thinking. Start speaking up and asking for changes
well dang when I was in high school I was 4'11, 90lb and looked 10 yrs old. That counts me out as a flyer as to your age/size requirement. So I guess I'd just not cheer or base that "regular" size flyer that looks her age. You can't help what size you'll be whether tall or short.

Anyway I've never (at least I don't remember) having a big growth spurt. I wish I could have maybe I'd be 5'6 now.

No one ever complains when the heaviest kid is the base, so why would you complain when the lightest kid is the flyer?

As a sport we absolutely HAVE to stop glorifying one position over the other, they are all equally as important. The fact that talented athletes leave the sport because they no longer fly is ridiculous, most flyers will not fly for the entirety of their cheer career and that's okay.

Yup. I thought being the mom of a base would be a picnic compared to the 6 seasons I spent as a flyer mom. Nope. See, I KNOW more now. I used to think any "issues" my cp's stunt group had were solely my flyer cp's fault. And it was very stressful. Now, I'll see a bobble & know "crap, cp didn't grab the foot in time" or something. Just as stressful.

Very true my oldest was a flyer until she grew to 5"7. She's now an amazing backspot. All positions are equally important. I've seen so many talented kids leave gyms because we've put so much emphasis on flying. They just keep chasing the dream from gym to gym many times finding out the promise the new gym made wasn't accurate either. . Without bases and backspots there would be no stunts or pyramids. They comprise the majority of the Team. I do however see in a culture that glorifies flying how kids can have a hard time transitioning. Thank goodness my girl did not!

I've noticed that my best bases are the girls who used to fly.

You were an unusual flyer parent! At least in my experience. The flyer parents at cp's gym always blame the bases for anything that goes wrong in the stunt.
