So a few days ago I heard my old gym in my city is trying to field an open team next season and tryouts are in April! I’m super excited because I had been wanting to do an open team for a few years but did not want to make the commitment to travelling to a gym far while working full time and doing college full time. Being that I graduated last year and this is my old gym possibly with a lot of my old teammates, I’m super excited and hope this works out!

My dilemma is that I’m super out of shape[emoji23][emoji24]. Long story short I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good stretching routine to get my body ready and back to the good old days (or close enough). Also a good workout routine to get in shape, build stamina/endurance, and core strength overall toning would be super helpful! I’m super excited for this and I hope it works out every if only for a little while, I know how open teams can usually fall through a lot. Anyway thanks in advance for any tips or help offered!

Just a little background information, I’m 24 about to be 25 and it’s been 7 years since I cheered. It’s been forever since I actually posted on the boards since I’ve been super busy with moving, finally graduating (!!), and trying to find my first adult job. But I’m excited to finally be back [emoji1665]

Welcome back to the boards! YouTube will be one of your best friends. There's an abundance of cheer conditioning and stretching regimes there for you to utilize. I would also recommend that you attend tumbling, conditioning and stunt classes classes at a local gym or the former gym you're interested in trying out for if available.

Cheerleading is one of those things that you never really "lose" but it does take a bit of work to get your body back into the swing of things after years of rest. You may not be able to everything that you used to but most of it will still be there. I'll be 33 in a little over a month and can still out out jump my athletes and can whip out a full on demand with a little prayer [emoji23][emoji23]

Good luck in your journey back into AS Cheer and of course we are all here for support and guidance. Keep us posted with your progress!

Many of the young and older athletes at our gym (and of all positions) love the Stunt Stand straps to help them with flexibility. Definitely recommend a foam roller as well for those post workout pains. ;) My kiddo does some CrossFit classes from time to time and those have tremendously helped her stamina for full outs, along with strength for flying and tumbling! If you can manage to fit some CrossFit exercises into your schedule (there’s many online if you don’t want to go to a gym) HIGHLY recommend it! They’ll let you adjust the workouts to whatever works for you and your body!

Like another poster stated, YouTube is a great tool. We love Gabi Butler’s videos in this house! Not sure if you’ve heard of Cheerfit but it’s worked wonders with my CP. There’s a subscription price (I can’t remember the exact rates but don’t remember it being too obscene), but you can find many of the workouts for free on their IG or googling them. They tend to have many free challenges as well.

Best of luck getting back into the swing of things and wishing you a successful season!

I had noticed cheerfit and another company called cheer conditioning academy. Both offer the subscriptions for $10 a month and I was thinking of doing one for maybe a month just to get a workout routine/regimen solid. Any experience with both? Anyone know which would be better to utilize?

I’m doing the same! I’d recommend going to open gyms- then the muscles that hurt the next day are the ones you have to work the most on!

I find the Sweat app great for general fitness. The main BBG programme is really good, and it’s also got yoga-style workouts too.

Stretching wise I’ve pretty much been doing splits stretches, straddle stretches and bridges. I probably need to work that up a bit more if my 25 year old back is going to ever pull a non-Dorito again
