There is a rumor going on in my neck of the woods that World's age will remain at 13 next year, but I do not have confirmation.

From someone who listened to the webinar, The age grid will remain the same for 19-20. However, in 20-21, ALL senior ages will move to 13, which means than the non-worlds teams senior age will jump 2 years (from where it is currently, at 11.). If you have an athlete who ages into senior (11) for 19-20, they will age out back to junior for 20-21. Not a fan of that part.

Ugh, as a parent of a CP in that age range I feel like they are the ones who keep getting affected by these changes (starting with the original raise that they took back, but after tryouts!)

I'm in the same boat. My athlete will be negatively affected by these changes in 20-21. I think it will be detrimental for the small gyms that struggle to put teams together. :(

But if they are still Junior aged, I don't understand what the big deal is. My CP14 was on a senior aged team for the past 2 seasons. This season she is on 2 junior teams. Personally, I did not see it as a step back. I was just happy to have her on age appropriate teams again. She will age out of junior at the end of this season.

First, all I have to say is wow and will Senior age ever be a hard 14? I thought that was the original plan to increase each year until Senior reached 14 which would have All Star squads look more like realistic aged Middle School and High School squads i.e. middle school aged and high school aged. I also know that the small gym discussion usually comes into play here but I thought the new International Divisions for Levels 1-4, etc had a more liberal age grid with I could have sworn I saw age 5 as the bottom of Jr. IDK and speaking of the Bottom of Junior IMO I think it should be 10. And the Top of Youth should go to 12 and the Top of Junior to 15.

I agree. I've been saying before I think mini should be 9 and under, youth 12 and under & junior 15 and under.

My CP is turning 11 and could technically be on a Sr team next season and then not be eligible for a season. She'll live. :)

I don't have any issue with my athlete being on a junior team at all. The problem is, she has been on a Junior 5 for two years, but those teams are hard to put together, as you have to have enough kids with those skills to do so. We won't have the kids for it next year. For her to go to level 4, which would be two levels down in her case, would be really hard for her with the way she is wired. And we don't have the option of going to another gym. If we always had a junior 5 available, I'd have no complaints.

Well if the speculation posted here about the changes are true it does make me curious about the bottom ages and overall changes to youth and junior. What you propose sounds ok to me...

I actually have the official age grid, I just can't figure out how to get it to post here, I am technically challenged! At first glance it appears that there are no changes in age to anything for next year - top, bottom, whatever.

Overall, I think the changes to the age grid are positive. It was really good for my CP-8 to have been on J4 instead of J5 this year.

I think slowing the progression a little gives kids more to look forward to. I worry my kid would get bored and quit if there's not new things to strive for. I'm glad that the kids that had to wait a year for worlds, etc aren't going to be affected 2 years in a row, though!

Question: So in theory a kid could be eligble for S1-5R in 19-20 and pushed BACK to Junior in 20-21?

I think the changes in general are positive for kids coming up in the sport, though it is probably not fun for the small percentage of "in the middle" aged kids directly affected in 20-21.

Disclaimer: I have a HS background so I generally am in favor of Age Grid Reflecting School Grade Band Ages. Youth reflecting K-5 so 5-10. Junior reflecting MS so 11-13. Senior reflecting HS (and super seniors) so 14-18/19.

CP will probably be one of those "in the middle" if they up the ages in 20-21 and keep the birthday cut off the same. Luckily her gym has both Jr. 5r and 5, so assuming she keeps cheering it should work out fine for her. I do feel bad for kids at smaller gyms where there aren't as many teams available. It would be annoying to have to go back a level simply because the age grid changed.
