I wore one when I danced years ago and it was pretty common to see them at comps. But then they sort of fell out of fashion. Now they’ve had a bit of a resurgence in AS cheer. How common are they?

I’m not a fan, but I understand the positives. If I had my way I’d ask my girls to keep their hair short year-round because floppy ponytails can sort of obscure choreo, especially when girls load/look. However, I’m aware that that brazenly oversteps that “boundaries” thing.

I think they are semi popular. I absolutely love when I see teams with buns or braids. That says athlete far more to me than giant ponies. We want our kids to be taken seriously as athletes, let’s let them look the part. That said, my kid wears one. She has super curly hair and our gym has a straight hair policy (which really frustrates me, because I don’t like the message it sends to those who don’t fit the mold). Heat straightening her hair will damage it and even when I do, it makes it so long, it’s a lot of hair. A fake pony makes it easier. It gives her an awful headache, though, and if she was just allowed to be her natural, beautiful self, this would all be avoided. (Kind of a touchy subject for me, lol)

It’s the aspect of cheer that I wish would die.

It’s hair, people! It’s not on the scoresheet. We need to let it go!

I am with you, hair pieces may make you look "uniform" but they look ridiculous... some are so large I don't know how people tumble with them. If you want to ensure the bow is in exactly the same place, choose a bun.. you are putting a bun in anyways to put the dead animal on the child's head.

I saw a post about cheer hair goals an I actually was like really goals, the hair piece didn't match the hair, it was frizzy, the curls were choppy and random, and I am sure this athlete is a beautiful young lady with great hair.

My kid has a pony, too. To save her hair from the damage, it’s well worth it.

Hair pieces are not allowed at our gym. If you showed up to a competition with one in, the gym owner would make you take it out. She has said more than once that she doesn't want her athletes looking at pictures of themselves later in life wondering what they have on their head.
Personally, I think they look awful and I am glad that my daughter is not have to wear them. Although she would probably like it.

Like many, CP has one, and I would prefer braids, a straight pony, or a bun. But until our gym abandons the giant teased ponytail look, the fake pony is much easier to deal with and less stressful on everyone, including DD’s hair.

I am seriously so surprised at how expensive they are. I am not sure if White women know this but there is no reason for that pony to cost that much. You can literally go to any Black beauty supply store, buy the hair and make your own pony for NOT $300.

I'm liking the braids, low ponies, etc. this season.

One of a few things going the right way in cheer.....hair. No more poofs thank god and less crazy teasing anything else.

New here. With a relatively new CP. In my limited experience, they seem to be pretty common. My CP has one because it's just so much easier. I'm not sure why they can't just wear their hair as is (provided it is out of their faces). Does anyone actually look at the hair and say "if only they all had the same hairstyle, this routine would be SO MUCH BETTER"? I would hope not.

I feel like it's starting to fade away a little and now braids, scrunchies, buns, are starting to take over. I feel like the alternative to hairpieces is a more sporty look, which I appreciate. Considering how much time and effort our kids put into a routine, I am all about the more athletic styles. I am sure the huge, teased ponies will always be around. A lot of people buy the hairpieces out of convenience and in order to save their kid's hair from all the styling and teasing when the gym requires a teased pony.

This is why I agree to it and understand, but do they need the massive teased pony? A good well executed routine would be just that even without massive teased hair.

It's not on the scoresheet. However, different comps look for different things. Some want the slick high pony. Some want the big hair. Some want clean. We have done posh ponies most of the season. We have one more comp and we will (at least our team) do the buns. You see a lot of teams doing them. I myself prefer the traditional high pony. The buns are easy though.
