These are extra items being ordered by parents for the athletes, that is the "they" you are talking about. It is very hard to tell your child no when you know that everyone or almost everyone else is also ordering one. I knew mine wouldn't wear it past the first month if that, and that is exactly what happened.

The Worlds rings are "free" as mentioned above. The kids are sized after they win and then the rings are delivered to the gym a few months after. Free until it has to be replaced because it was lost on the slip and slide at prom house but that is another story.

Always wondered how often kids actually wear the big rings from NCA and Majors.

Or the NCA jacket.

If it's anything like the jackets, trophies, blankets I got from smaller comps, into the closet it goes?

I'd imagine so.

I mean you can't wear it to school (because at school who cares), or you're graduating so you really aren't going to wear it in college where no one cares, it's too expensive to wear out and who wants to get it lost or damaged?

You don't want to travel with it to other big comps because you don't want it to get stolen. I've read here that weirdos will take bows of off kid's backpacks so they'll for SURE take your rings.

Seems like it's more of a "put away and take it out for pics" item?

Eh...kiddo wears the Summit ring fairly regularly. It’s not too cumbersome. I will say...I didn’t think the NCA jacket would ever come out of the closet...but she occasionally wears it in the Winter to bigger comps. It’s super heavy & very difficult to stuff in a bag. I think she wears it bc she remembers when she was younger and how amazed she was the first time she saw one. She didn’t think she’d ever have a chance to win NCA, and now she has 2. :) I’ve certainly ended up carrying that thing around, lol.

I don’t wear any of my rings.

But I still want that crap looking at me when I open my closet :)

No it’s not a practical purchase but it represents something that really can’t be created or bought anywhere else.

seeing a lot of tweets about giving silver medalists their moment back and not announcing the world champ before 2nd.. legit just had ptsd of worlds (2015?) where they announced up until 5th place, skipped 4th and went to 3rd and 2nd.. so you literally had no idea if you got 4th or 1st..... *cringe*

Yep, that was large senior 2013. Came down to CEA and F5. Not sure how they messed that one up haha.

I see a lot of people liking the way Worlds does it now. It avoids (some of) the spotlight and subsequent shaming on teams that may not be thrilled to hear their name called as silver. I understand the whole "but everyone should be happy with second, because some people never get that..." stuff. The reality is that many teams, especially at that level, may eventually be very proud of that silver, but the moments right after they find out they missed gold is not a happy one. It also quiets the "they got happy too early and therefore were poor sports..." complaints.

They give time to celebrate both of the teams when it is down to 2. That is plenty IMO.

I have a white jacket that i won during high school nationals way back in the day. I was terrified of wearing it because it was white and i was afraid i would ruin it. I could count on one hand how many times ive worn it out in public. but it still hangs on a hanger in my closet to this day 15 years later....
i honestly would rather have a medal or jacket then a ring, i can barely keep track of my wedding ring half the time....
