I have had so many discussions with parents that don't get the obvious parallel. They will say "my daughter shouldn't have to be on a team with people younger than her - she should be able to move up to senior even though she is only XX". What about the 17 year olds that don't want to be on a team with someone your daughter's age?

Ugh. I hope not. No 7th grader wants to be on a team with 6 year olds.

Maybe they could increase the bottom age for Youth as well? I don't know, it just seems unfair to the 12 year olds that they could ONLY be on a junior team, especially at a small gym that doesn't have such a broad range of teams/levels.

Curious how gyms will handle the age change....will they bother to put 11 year olds on a senior team this upcoming season knowing the following season they’ll have to bump down...is there any talk of “grandfathering” those kids in on a senior team (I think that would be a nightmare to mange...)

Our owner has said they will not be grandfathering in so she's planning on building teams around the changes so that kids won't have to bump back down (with our gym and teams that would mean bumping down a level). It's also a new uniform year for us and she doesn't want anyone buying a crop when the next year they'd have to be back in a full top.

Good question. Sort of feels as if so many changes happen every year that many programs probably do what works for the current year and they can figure out next year next year. That said I would think if they could avoid having to bump kids back down they probably would.

I doubt that they will grandfather as I have never heard of them doing it in the past. I remember we had a kid on our senior 5 years ago. The following season they changed the age for Worlds, so he had to move to junior 4.

I was doubtful too. We have a couple people at our gym that are adamant that it says they will grandfather those kids in and that it states so in the age grid/rules but I couldn't verify that information anywhere. @BlueCat have you seen or heard anything on that?

My child doesn't fall into the category so it ultimately has no effect of me I was just curious :')

We haven't quite gotten to the point where we researched that. We will look into it this week.

We won't be. Though we also infrequently put 11 year olds on senior anyway.

If I'm reading this new grid right - I could see where some smaller gyms may struggle with keeping kids on Juniors for 19/20 and 20/21, though - depending on the kid and the teams available.

Ex: If you have a variety of Junior teams, J4 Suzy is not going to feel held back by spending BOTH SEASONS as a junior because you can bump her to J5 or J5R at some point. Yeah she is probably going to be the older kiddo on it, but at least she'd feel like she is making progress skills-wise?

If your only Junior team is J3, and Suzy has been on it for a season or 2 already and is ready to move on, I can see where this is going to cause Suzy and family to make some decisions.

See also: kiddos who are getting to the end of their FLYER TIME AS JUNIORS (because growing) and were really hoping to go/stay Senior to open up flying opportunities.

Yes and no. This is actually one area where the IASF age grid can come in handy. International Junior is ages 10-16. International Senior is is 14-18. The broad age range of International Junior is massively helpful for small gyms in making level 3+ teams.

The main problem with the IASF age grid is the requirement for a minimum of 16 athletes on the team. Honestly, that was more of a problem for our small gym than the actual ages were.

This especially the Senior I think 14-18 is perfect for "Senior" teams WHY? it is a realistic age range just like a regular High School squad. I also think that the bottom of Junior is perfect at 10 but it should top at 14. The only other change in my opinion is that Youth should be bumped up and topped at 12 (Remember you are still considered a kid or youth at most places if your are 12 OR YOUNGER) with a bottom of 8 that way the overlap or grey area is between Youth and Junior and not Junior and Senior. Now, I am still learning about this "International" description but it seems as if a gym encounter athletes that have the same skill level but a broad age range they can just become International of Level "XYZ" right? Or just add an Extra Small Division for Levels 1-4... IDK
