This might be a silly question, but when an athlete crosses over to another team, what are they typically charged for ? I imagine it isn't "double" the cost of being on one team, is it?

Most gyms would charge a little extra tuition each month but not double. Most comps cost a little extra but there have been a some that cost double.

Ours was based on the hours in the gym of the team you crossed to. It was between $300-$525 depending on the team you crossed to.

It paid for coaches, competition fees, camp fees and gym rent. It worked out to about 1/4 the cost of full tuition

This was 5 years ago and I know everything has changed, but every year I double teamed we paid no extra at the gym for fees it was just whatever the competitions charged for double teaming which is always some expense. But like others have said it just depends on your gyms charges and it depends on the competitions you go to what they charge.

This was our experience as well.

At our gym, there is a reduced fee compared to regular fees, and you don't pay twice for things like practice gear, insurance, membership, etc., since you already have it with your first team.

Thanks everyone! DD has a chance to cross but it all depends on how our gym handles the fees. I totally get paying for the comp fees and choreography fees, but won't be able to swing a whole lot extra above and beyond that. I guess we will wait and see what happens.

We have an up front fee that covers comp fees/music/choreography/coach travel, etc, and it is non-refundable after a specific date. If someone crosses after that date to replace an injured athlete or someone who left the gym, that fee covers their fees as a crossover. (If you cross to substitute due to injury or illness, it is understood that the athlete you are replacing will come back if they can, including for Summit, US Finals, Worlds, etc.) . If you cross all season, you pay those fees twice, but only pay tuition once. Our tuition includes unlimited tumbling and skills classes, so crossovers usually are kids who would be in the gym that much anyway. Athletes who have full or partial scholarships still pay those fees up front.

Crossover expenses vary by gym. You should ask your gym for the tryout packet (or whatever their literature is stating crossover fees/expectations.) These expenses should be available for the gym's customers. Even last years tryout packet could be a great guide if you still have that.

Competition crossover fees also vary by EP. Ask them what competitions they expect both teams to compete at (or take a look at last years schedule for a guide) and then research what the crossover fee for each comp is.

This might give you a better view of the financial expectations. Don't forget to factor in gas for extra practices if your commute is lengthy, extra team fees like team bonding/comp gifts (if your gym does this), extra practice wear for second team, etc.

My daughter was a crossover last year. I had to pay crossover comp fees and choreography fees for the 2nd team. It was somewhere between 60-70 more dollars per month.

Our gym charges a very reduced monthly fee ($70) and it covers comp fees and any other needed fees.

When my child double teamed we paid 2x the tuition, and almost 2x the comp fees. That's part of the reason we are no longer there!

Am I the only person who finds DOUBLE tuition to be suspiciously excessive?

I understand crossover fees from the comps, extra practice wear if is different, coach/choreo pay for the additional team, possible additional class if the team is required to be enrolled in it, etc.

But if this extra team is not adding on double the gym hours, double the tumbling classes, etc. why are folks being charged double tuition?
