I'm currently a sophomore in a high school Varsity cheer team. I have no experience with cheerleading, but I managed to make the cheer team the first tryout because I have dance experience. My coach put on the team as a back spot. I actually love the position. I am okay with getting hit in the face and being the leader in the stunt. The only problem was that I had no experience with being a back spot. My coach and other girls on the team always got on my rear because I never put enough power or because it felt like I wasn't holding the girl and the bases did all the work. Because of that, I was moved into being a front spot. The position is fun, but I wish I was a back spot. Being on the team, I learned to put more power into the stunt and to hold a girl better. On my team, we have 2 boys on the team who are experienced back spotters. We have one boy who is our main back spot, the other boy is the backup to the back spot, and I am there if the two back spots are either ineligible or injured. We have competition in two weeks and we have our cheer, stunts, and choreography ready, but last minute, we found out our two back spotters are BOTH ineligible, meaning I have to step in. Its no problem, but its the stunt group I have to work with. I had problems with the group because I'd always accidentally put my arm on one of the girls who was basing during the stunt. She'd always get agitated with me and go behind my back and talk about me. It brought my confidence and self-esteem down as she'd always talk about me and make fun of me and complain to the other girls on the team. I was removed from back spotting in their group, but now I'm back in the group. Competition is in 2 weeks and I'm willing to step in, but I can't work with a group that makes me feel bad about myself. Another thing is that whenever I ask the girls if there's anything I can improve on, they say no, and complain to my teammates and coach about me. The group lacks communication and exclude me from the talks and never help me on how I can improve. I don't want to go to my coach and complain and make a bigger problem. It's unbearable to work with these girls and I have no idea what to do anymore. I would love to get advice on how I can work with them and be better as a back spot!!!

As a backspot myself I would always lift up as much as I can as well as making “L’s” with my grips. I also watch YouTube videos of routines and focus on the backspots to watch how they backspot. Honestly, ask the coach before practice one day for advice on how to be more knowledgeable on back spotting. Coaches are there to help you learn! Good luck!

I forgot to add this: if it gets to the point where those girls are making you not like the team or make you not want to go to practices talk to the coach. It may or may not help but it will definitely make you feel better.
