Do you do real full ups or the all star variety? You know the one where the rules say “as long as the flyers hips spin 360 degrees, we don’t care how many laps her bases have to run to get her there.” That’s the kind of stuff that’s killing these young athletes. Why would a top need to know how to stay in a cylinder and be core tight when she can just stand there while her bases run circles around her? Why would a base need to know how to “chicken-wing” her elbow to initiate the turn and drive to get the flyer spinning when she can just lift and run?” The answer to “why” is “because they’re clueless about such things when they get to high school and college.”

My bases don't move, but thanks for your concern!

Much respect to both HS and AS athletes. @OldskoolKYcheercoach why would an AS coach, that's paid to win AS competitions, concentrate on HS or college cheer? The kids I know that cheer both HS and AS say it's comparing apples to oranges, and have no problem saying they couldn't complete their AS routine, stamina wise, with their HS flyers and vice versa.

I would love for some of these parents that are so adamant about raising the age to post videos lifting, tossing and catching a 40 lb cat litter bucket for 2 1/2 minutes and then tell us how those joints are feeling. The AS kids that are serious about College cheer know what their requirements are and are in the gym working on their own time, and there are plenty of AS kids in college cheer. Tell me those flyers don't look tiny in comparison:

Amen. I based littles in AS. When I moved on to college cheer, I hit the weight room, learned to fly, and became a dual base/flyer and mid. Those who are committed have no trouble making it work.

A-freaking-men. I cheered HS and all star and would NEVER be able to do my all star or college routine if I wasn't trained in all star, but I wouldn't be able to cheer gameday in college without my HS training. When I decided to cheer in college as a 5ft tall base with most of my skills learned in all star I made sure I trained so hard that they had no choice but to keep me for my stunting ability. It helps that I had some of the best coaches in the country and was pushed towards coaching because of how passionate they were.

Will it change or won’t it? That is still the question. At what point do we assume there’s no change this coming season if we haven’t heard anything? I feel like March would be a great time to clear things up

They have changed things mid-summer before, so who knows.

In all fairness you will almost always see the smaller flyers on the college coed teams. The flyers on college all girl are usually not as small as the coed flyers. But likewise our girls are also not doing one (wo)mans throughout gameday and their routines.

True, but according to our PT, lifting is not the main concern for injury in female cheerleaders, it's from the weight and force of impact coming down from baskets, ticking and tumbling. If there's a PT on the board, they can explain the bio-mechanics and hormonal science better than I can as to why women are more susceptible to ligament tears/injuries, dislocations and hyper-extension. I'm all for girl power, but I'm also willing to accept that females (especially pubescent girls) have anatomical and hormonal reasons as to why "lighter" when it comes to force of impact is better for joints and safety. It's hard to create stunt groups that work from a physics standpoint (bases/backs that are substantially taller/larger than their flyer) on an AS Sr. team when the majority of girls fall into the 5'2"-5'5" 110-140 lb range and that's going to happen if they continue to raise the age. AS versus HS debate-AS has more tosses, ticking and tumbling than HS. AG college debate-those women on college teams hit the gym often for strength training and to reduce injury risk, the majority of AS kids don't.

On the topic of rule changes, does anyone know why Small max number of athletes was changed to 22? Most comps have really big small divisions and then like a couple of teams in medium. (I’m talking about lower levels.) IMO it should be changed back to 20 or even 18 would be better.

^^^ I like this^^^ especially when you have competitions where you have to have a division broken up into 2 or more sections. But onto the age issue I just want to see a hard 14 for Senior and Please STOP the "Will Be Age" eligibility. In other words in the All Star Cheer World a 20 yo can start doing tequila shots in a bar as long as they are turning 21 by next December. But seriously there is nothing wrong with waiting your turn... JS

Probably going along with gymnastics and other sports in the Olympics that use the calendar year for age eligibility.

I’m still confused as to why some levels have small and large and other levels just small and medium. I just don’t get it?!

1-4 have small and medium, 5 has small and large. 5 went more in line with the Worlds divisions when it was 5R and 5, and they just didn't change the sizes this year when they changed the numbers.
