All-Star Covid-19 / Varsity Response

I think that given what we know about Varsity, they will not cancel any event unless they are legally forced to. No matter how much outrage it may draw, I think the cost of cancelling large scale events like Worlds/Summit would outweigh the negative press they feel they'd get for continuing on. With that being said, if Florida or the federal government puts some form of a ban down, that's probably the only way we'll see anything actually get cancelled.
Im kinda shocked it hasnt hit orlando with the amount of retired folk and tourists we get... I hope orlando doesnt get affected by this, but i wouldnt be surprised if it did.

The varsity response of coaches bring your own hand sanitizer is typical. At the very least put out a letter pretending to care about more than just the money.

im gonna go ahead and expect worlds to be cancelled. I wanna think that if even one or a few cases pops up in orlando/orange/seminole county before worlds they might be done. But crazier things have happened....

I really do think that in a month we’ll be in a better place and people will feel more comfortable going to Worlds. I’m betting Varsity is banking on the same thing. They don’t want to cancel Worlds only to see COVID become contained in five weeks and realize that cancelling was completely unnecessary, as was the profit loss that came with it.

I don’t know that they should be taking any actions with Worlds so far out, but they should ABSOLUTELY be cancelling comps this weekend and over the next few weeks.

Sure, most athletes are young and healthy, but what about athletes with diabetes? Asthma? They exist (and in my experience are common!) and they are still at risk. And even if they don’t display symptoms, they can carry it home to their areas and infect others. Just seems like a stupid risk to take.

If you’re the “patient zero” for your hometown because you attended a cheer competition... will that have been worth it? What about if an elderly or immune compromised individual in your area has sever complications or dies from it?

Sure, they can keep competitions on and everything could be fine. But if it’s not, that is a bad look for Varsity.... so they should err on the side of caution.

We’ve seen what’s happened in Italy and it’s like we refuse to learn and realize that no, it’s not “just the flu”! I’m not suggesting panic or buying everything from the grocery store, but simply being cautious and cancelling large events isn’t panicking, it’s being smart about the reality of this disease and that social isolation is the best way to stop it.

The peak of this virus in most European countries will probably be beginning to mid-April, the US will probably be beginning to mid-May. A 30 day travel ban has been placed on foreign nationals from Europe traveling to the US. If the disease continues to spread here in the US (and it will), we will see that travel ban expanded and extended. It would be hard to hold Worlds without participation from other countries.

We only know how many people in the world that have been tested for Coronavirus actually have it. I can guarantee you that the actual number of people that have Coronavirus is significantly larger than the cases that have been confirmed through testing.

Yeah I keep hearing the line about how greedy Varsity is - but what sets them apart and above other companies- billion dollar companies have halted all business travel - canceled conferences- I’ll have to self quarantine at work for 14 days starting Monday after attending the comp this weekend as it is a large gathering of more than 100 people with zero screening. Gyms around me are starting to pull out. And we had someone recuse themselves from competing due to a medical condition. I think Varsity needs to step up and actually care about their customers, clients and fan base. This is not a good look for them.

I know a handful of people who had (after traveling) symptoms and went to The ER for testing but were refused. So the population of those who have it is likely much larger than we know. And we are actively watching what happened in China and now Italy and for some reason the population in the US thinks that we will have a different outcome....

So I live in germany and two teams from my gym have worlds bids..I think they will be unable to go which truly sucks..

German nationals have been moved from march to june..

I feel for Varsity and gym owners right now, a pandemic is not something businesses deal with everyday. Making the right business decision doesn't mean you have immediate answers for your customers on details. Much respect and prayers for all business leaders dealing with this right now.

Plus i think its more then just attending a comp and risk exposing yourself. Pretty much all these athletes and parents have to travel through airports if not multiple ones, which greatly ups the risk of coming in contact with it.
And flu season is still going on, and the symptoms can be similar from what ive read.
So yeah the athletes are young and mostly healthy and would be fine so to speak, but then they go home and go back to school and see grandma and possibly young siblings, etc. etc.
And according to multiple sources its suppose to get worse before it gets better.... And could take a year to create a vaccine for it.

I said earlier the situation is evolving by the hour; the NBA just suspended their season. This is going to be a wild ride.
This happened because a Utah Jazz athlete that was supposed to play in OKC last night tested positive. They got the word right before the game and cancelled right before tip off. Another athlete from the Jazz visited a local high school yesterday afternoon. AFAIK both teams are still quarantined but there were thousands of fans there and some may have had contact with other Jazz players who may have contracted the illness from the confirmed player.

We have a comp in downtown OKC on Saturday and so far has not been cancelled or limited. I've been on the wait and see, don't panic side but now that there is a case in my city and someone who comes in contact with lots of people I'm kinda freaking out. I'm diabetic too, so there's that, but word among the diabetic community is if you're in good control you are lower risk.

Has anyone’s school district taken any action? I’ve heard some have. One of my daughter’s teachers told them that back when swine flu hit their school shut down for few weeks so don’t be surprised if it happens.

Our schools closed 1 day this week to prep for virtual school. Our teachers have a great plan and were very transparent with the kids (at least my middle schooler) on how it will work and what is required daily from them.
