In defense of Varsity and gym owners, the majority of big decisions happened on Weds of this week. UCA has teams from Germany, Russia, Sweden, Croatia, Mexico, Canada and Denmark there, it isn't your average US event. They already had families in hotels and coaches picking up credentials when the other companies were just beginning to cancel. It wasn't a case of waiting until the last possible second, UCA was already under way.

Yes. Gyms were literally ALREADY IN FL.

This!! Also if UCA/Disney wasn’t offering refunds would you really want your families losing out on an insane amount of money? My family was scheduled to sail on a cruise Saturday, out of the $1300 we paid we have only gotten back $250 with the rest to only be used as a future cruise credit.

Amid the insanity - we've had to close our gym. We don't want the kids to completely forget what cheer is while they're off, so we're attempting some 'creative coaching' techniques so they at least continue thinking about cheer and their teammates while they're gone.
Does anyone have any recommendations for youth through junior targeted podcasts or youtube workouts we can send home? I'd be EXTRA excited if someone had a good podcast about not putting forth 100% effort at practice!!! (minimum effort doesn't give maximum results, KIDDOS)
I'm looking at the hit zero show - but I'm looking for a bit more of mental coaching in the podcasts.
TIA!!
(also, if I should post this elsewhere, please let me know!!)

I love your optimism. At this point I just hope there is a Worlds.

I wouldn’t call it “optimism” lol. I just believe that Varsity will, with all their effort, avoid the logistical nightmare and profit loss of cancelling such a huge event. I work in rescue and it’s a pain cancelling fundraisers at the last minute: redirecting animal transport, losing deposits on table rentals, etc. And that’s a local event that only lasts a few hours. I literally cannot imagine the chaos that would come from cancelling the multi-day, multinational event that is Worlds, not to mention the profit loss that would come with it. Unless this virus turns into another Ebola strain, they’ll avoid that mess.

Plus, I’m sitting here right smack dab in the middle of it all in the Bay Area, and it’s not exactly the hellscape that the media is painting it out to be. We’re cautious, but we’re fine.

And with all these quarantines, cancellations, protocols, etc., designed to curb transmission and exposure, I think we’ll see a turning point soon. Between all the class/sports/event cancellations, the self-imposed work quarantines, and the Purell mania, this thing will have nowhere to go. If it takes two weeks for carriers to manifest symptoms and only a few days to recover, I think we’ll see a definite downslide in four weeks.

That is terrible! Nice way to lose loyal customers imo.

There's that optimism again! I am not a dr. or health expert so won't argue the fact that many experts not only don't think it won't be over in 4 weeks, we might not even be at peak for 4 weeks. There are many charts online that show the curve and it is not pretty. I agree most of us will be ok and we will get through it but they are trying to avoid mass gatherings and mass infections that overwhelm the healthcare system and disrupt supply chains to stock medicines, masks, supplies in general etc.

I pray you are right and we are through this soon but if we aren't Varsity will not be able to change CDC and WHO recommendations against large gatherings. They will not get Disney parks to re-open. They won't be able to get air travel going to and from Europe. If the MLB, the NBA etc are not playing I highly doubt national cheer events should or will happen.

Absolutely. It’s been a nightmare especially since American airline refused to refund our plane tickets so we are just making the best of it. Good thing we cancel yah ear of time because Carnival just cancelled the cruise. People are blasting them at the moment.

kenny and Lisa from Spring are creating some videos for cheer at home using a variety of coaches from all over specialising in all things cheer that can be done safely at home. Worth giving them a follow for when they do come out!

Has anyone’s school district taken any action? I’ve heard some have. One of my daughter’s teachers told them that back when swine flu hit their school shut down for few weeks so don’t be surprised if it happens.
I work at a daycare attached to a school in Ontario, Canada, and all schools are shut down for the next 3 weeks along with my center. It was very sudden, last night we had a email schools were closed and it was up in the air as to if we also were going to be closed, got an email just before noon stating we close at 6pm for 3 weeks. There is also a mandatory self-isolation here if you have traveled anywhere in the last 14days

All our local schools are closed for 2 weeks, and will then reevaluate. All the colleges are going online after Spring Break and are telling students not to return to campus unless absolutely necessary (some are closing dorms, but some are allowing international students and those who live really far away to stay).

It's getting worse by the day and not better. I went to the grocery store last night (side note - not a single roll of TP to be found) and within the 45 minutes that I was gone my kids' season was over (no NCA, no practices, nothing), and the dorms went from staying open during the on-line schooling period to "you have until Tuesday to get your stuff and after that no access until April 5". I am nearly sure that April 5 will be extended through the end of the semester, and am also sure that the graduation ceremony will be cancelled. Boston has closed schools until April 27 and have postponed the Boston Marathon. I don't see Varsity or any IEP having the ability to host another in person competition this season even if they wanted to. Regardless of how people feel about the mandated closings, everyone should be very scared about what this will do to the economy.

Manitoba is closing schools for 3 weeks starting March 23

Our last 2 competitions have been cancelled and most gyms are closed for at least a the next 3 weeks. We’re just taking it day by day and hopefully we can still have some practices before the end of the season.

This is all so wild. Our kids are so sad and all of us don’t know what to do. Just stay sanitized and be cautious.

What if they held Worlds virtually?

IDK how you’d do it, but I’m sure you could. Film yourself live at your gym. Verify you’re live somehow, probably with a unique question/answer password or something. Let the judges do their thing.

It wouldn’t solve the logistical mess of cancelling, but at least it’d be something.

It would not be without its problems or objections. And if they did that, I think we’d see the same attitude toward the winners that we saw in 2016 in that it might be assumed the results are skewed. But you could do it.
