Has anyone else started discussing plans yet?

Our gym just put out their plans for next season-private evals in late May/June, teams start practicing in July, one day comps within a 3 1/2 hour drive and 2 day ones within 60 miles except for UCA, Summit only if team parents vote to go, no comp gifts that have extra costs, scaled back practice wear, no comps in December, season ends after UCA except for Summit teams.

Honestly, it sounds great. I don't know if CP will decide to cheer this season or not (I'd kind of like her to, since it's her senior year, but at the same time, it's her senior year, and she's worried about making her knee flare up again), but it sounds like a much less stressful season.

i think our coach just wants to be able to open and not be stressed about everything......i know only one practice gear, no talk about new uniforms........

From what I hear just from knowing folks who coach in school cheer and other places:

If you've been annoyed with the "new specific practice wear for every major comp and don't forget the specific 2 pairs of Mickey ears for Summit or High School Nationals" thing, you're in for a treat this season.

Folks seem to be planning to scale way back. Example: Set numbers of practicewear worn the whole season (like one or 2). I know this is NOT really going to be a big new uniform year for many of my friends who coach schools, thinking all star will be same.

Because I think people know that the extras, tons of air travel, etc. will price people out.

Air travel in general would make me nervous. Who knows where will be in late fall and into winter but I wouldn't want to plan on it just yet.

We don't have specifics yet. Normally tryouts occur right after we get back from Summit but that is on pause until we get clearance from the state. Have heard that we will have less travel (perhaps just NCA and Summit/Worlds), more locals/comps within driving distance, and lower apparel costs.

not at our gym or school. I’ve heard talk they we might get new warmups this year. Also need to buy 2 new sets of practicewear and possible uniform. I get this is part of Allstar and uni is one thing because it kinda depends on team. But considering how the season ended, uncertainty of future, and possible resurgence. I kinda think it’s a slap in the face to ask us to invest in more new stuff considering unemployment rates and effectiveness of zoom classes.

school cheer...coach told the girls she’s considering having us buy some camp wear from Lululemon....this is after a parent meeting where a few parents expressed concern for the costs of school cheer (Already 1700-2k, including camp & booster fees), because their households are 100% unemployed. Unfortunately most parents in the program can afford this but not all. Doesn’t mean you ignore the ones who can’t.

Any gym thinking about adding unnecessary costs for the upcoming season may be in for a rude awakening. Cheer was already pricing parents out in a great economy and there will be very few who can continue to pay what they have been, especially since any gym with a Booster club will have taken a huge hit with fundraising opportunities.

Not sure what it says about my tax bracket that I didn't even know LuluLemon made custom items?

I coached girls who did own a few some LL/Athletica stuff for the "wear what you want" practice days, but it was never required. (School district is very similar to your description, a good bit who could spend more, but I'd say 20% who were lucky to be able to afford to participate much less buy $50 bras. I tried veryyyy hard to stay in the under $1,000 ballpark.)

It was always important to me to watch costs because just because someone can spend it, doesn't mean they want to!

We have at least a dozen moms who have vinyl cutters and like making stuff, in a small D2 gym (probably more), which is one reason why we ended up with so many custom practice outfits, competition gifts, etc. I really think that if we collected the cost of ONE Rebel or Varsity practice outfit for supplies and turned it over to the team's parents, the kids would lack for nothing.

Has anyone else's gyms started opening? I'm in Florida and our Governor has tightened his stance on what is and isn't being opened in the phases.

Starting Monday we enter phase one with restaurants and stores opening at 25 percent capacity. No bars, gyms and hair/beauty service salons may be open. Nationally, gyms can open in phase one but Desantis has (FINALLY) started to lead and make some decisions of his own.

My question is how many of y'all consider a cheer gym to fall under the "gym" category?? Because I sure don't. But our gym owner is convinced she is opening once gyms can open. She's also convinced we can still open even in phase one because "chances are we won't get caught" ... This seems incredibly naive and shows childish behavior. We have no plan on how to even open safely - i.e. face masks for kids/coaches, washing hand breaks every x amount of minutes, how to enter and exit, what happens to the parent viewing area...

Just thinking logically, how is it possible to stunt (or really even run a routine) 6 ft apart with masks on? How can the gym ensure all mats and equipment are clean? Think about how many hands touch the floor and Velcro strips during tumbling then touch someone else's foot or ankle or body during stunting and then touching your own body for any choreo?

Besides being completely appalled at my gym's behavior, I am genuinely curious how other gyms are going about the reopening process?

We aren't in phase one in our state regardless of realistic classification, but I believe cheer gyms are "gyms". We had a posted notice on our door (days after we were already closed voluntarily) that we had to close because we were a gym.

We are developing a plan such as you described, I agree with that part. Just curious why you think cheer gyms aren't gyms.

Honestly I think my biggest argument is that traditional gyms are easily able to maintain social distance. You can be an independent gym goer using only one piece of equipment at a time. Most, if not all, gym members are adults or young adults who actively understand the situation we're in and see the gym's being open as a privilege. This (I hope...) leads to adults being respectful, keeping to themselves and getting a solid workout before cleaning up and heading home again.

I also think "normal" gyms are significantly easier to clean and have a much easier time developing a plan of reopening/cleaning.

In cheer gyms, you're dealing with a lot of younger children who are beyond ready to have fun, see & hug their friends again and maybe don't understand the full scope of what we've been experiencing. I coach tinys and there's absolutely no way I'd be able to go a whole practice without my kiddos touching eachother, touching me, touching equipment (Love em but they're not the cleanest lol)

My belief lies that cheer gyms are a youth sport and are more in line with day care facilities, day camps, schools, scholastic sports... ect. instead of an adult-membership gym.

I'd love to hear your thoughts! I'm more than ready to get back in the gym. Both gyms, really. lol.

Edited because Friday quarantine brain makes me not able to spell.
