CSP has a slew of talented flyers on that team. Theres an argument for every single one to be center, not just RC or KP. As a fan, I have a preference and honestly it isn't either of the girls you mentioned. At the end of the day though, her poor daughter cant win. She's put in center and everyone has an opinion, if she's removed from center and everyone will have an opinion. Truthfully, that little girl is fantastic in the air, was there nepotism involved? IMO yes but my opinion doesn't matter.

Honestly, I think this conversation flames a lot of destructive discourse that is already rampant about CSP's second born on twitter and instagram and that's what I'm trying to get at. We are all fans of the sport and have our opinions, especially about LAG. But there are enough kids online comparing these 15 year olds already. And I want to say that I do agree with everything you said above, that's not where this is coming from. I just feel really bad about what these girls are constantly subjected too online and I have for a while.

That’s partly what I was getting at: KP really can’t win. And it’s partly because of this situation her mom created. I mean, she was never going to have an easy time of it because she’s the talented cheerleader on a powerhouse team that’s run by her mom. And people love to hate on those they feel jealous of and/or threatened by, and that’s KP to a tee. She’s got a lot going for her. So from the start she was at a disadvantage in terms of social media BS, which has become a significant part of our society and cannot be dismissed, like it or not.

So when her mom put her center... eeesh. That pretty much confirmed that every a*****e anon in the world was going to come for her. And no, that shouldn’t be the case, but it is. My mom was my coach for a bit, and she never gave me any kind of perceived advantage unless I was the best kid for the job, and honestly not even then. She didn’t want people thinking she was favouring me and she didn’t want me being bullied for it. I didn’t understand it at the time and it made me mad. I wanted her to treat me like any other kid and choreograph me based on my skills instead of going out of her way to put me in the back for every routine so nobody could cry nepotism. But now I understand she couldn’t treat me like any other kid because I wasn’t any other kid. I was the coach’s kid. And she probably saved me a lot of heartache in the long run by going out of her way to show other kids and parents that I did not, by any stretch of the imagination, have even the slightest advantage.

So that’s where I’m coming from with this. I have experience being the coach’s kid. But my mom took the exact opposite approach as CSP. So I can’t help but feel CSP’s decision to put her kid center and expose her to even more bullying — on top of what she already gets being the coach’s kid — was kind of avoidable. It’s just a lot of pressure for a kid and I just wonder if it’s worth it.

But it’s an interesting observation you mentioned that got me thinking: why do we talk about these kids? I think the answer is: because most of us will never get to coach athletes of their caliber, at least not 36+ at one time. And I think it’s interesting to imagine how fun choreo would be when you’ve got seemingly unlimited talent pool to work with.

And for me personally, it’s not the kids as much as it’s the strategy behind them. I love sports theory more than sports. So when CSP — who is a talented businesswoman and coach — makes these decisions that don’t really add up, it’s hard not to wonder aloud what her logic is if only because there might be something to be learned from it. But in this case I don’t think there is.

ETA: I swear to god these responses don’t look as long in the text box.

I agree with your post. I honestly think has she maybe should have waited and not put her center her very first year. It feed into the theory that she would even before KP became senior eligible. I’m not a CEA fan so I don’t follow them and don’t know how old she is. At this point the big question is do she keep her center until she ages out? Or actually put her aside for someone who truly deserves the spot? She’s talented no doubt but so were some of the older girls that got pushed behind her. I watch a Instagram live with the Rosario kids and someone asked them about their spots on the floor. They stated their parent did what was best for TGLC not their kids. Since I closely follow TGLC I’ve noticed that since their youngest have been on the team she is only center during the baskets. (Well deserved because she is a freaking basket queen). Demi is center for the dance portion because well the girl can perform her butt off .

I want to say, if LAG eligibility begins at 12 (or at least used to), then KP has been on SE for four years? Not super sure.

I’m pretty sure RC was center three years ago, and then KP has been center for the last two years. So KP wasn’t always center through her duration on SE, but has been recently. And I don’t think she’s coming off center any time soon. I don’t think CSP could take her off if she wanted to. Can you imagine the bullying that would arise from that? Kids would never let her live it down even if it was the most sound, strategic decision. Those saying she’s only center because of nepotism and should be removed wouldn’t be appeased, they’d be reenergised. They’d take it as confirmation that they were right all along and never let that poor kid forget it. I’d certainly want to protect my kid from that if I could.

Not to mention CSP probably wants to win Worlds with her kid in center. Doing the ball-up 360 — the skill that put CEA on the map — if at all possible. At least, that’s what I gathered from this last year. And I get it. It’s a very romantic thought. Not sure how feasible it is given how much things have changed since 2012 when the ball-up 360 was IT, but a very nice thought. So I’m betting that until that happens, nothing’s changing much.

I got curious and went to look. KP wasn't on in 2016-2017 but RC was and was not center. KP first year was 2017-2018 and she was center. So she has been center the last 3 years.

I just looked back and saw that RC was center for the first elite in 17-18. That’s probably what I was thinking of.

And I could swear I’ve seen both of them goofing around in the 2016-era black uni, but maybe they just reused it. Admittedly, I only started paying attention to AS again around 2017 so I don’t have a super thorough understanding of recent history.

Interesting input re: parental favoritism discussion:

What's funny is I've always felt that parent coaches (99% of the time) are HARDER on their OWN kids than others.

Example: my husband was 1000% harder on our kiddo when they were on a team he coached.

Our kid: *breathes wrong during a play*
Husband: (20 min lecture on ride home.)

Also, when my dad coached me for one season of pee wee softball around first or second grade, I spent 90% of the season on the bench.

Rude.

(I was awful but still. Rude.)

It seems like I'm in the minority here, but I don't personally feel that any of us can rightfully say who should or shouldn't be center without being present at practices. There is so much that goes on behind the scenes that plays into a coach's decision. I may be wrong but I do not think KP is center for the entire routine, just the elites. This is very similar to what someone said above regarding the Rosario kids and only being center for dance or only being center for baskets. Flexibility (RC's strong suit) is not the sole driver for technique points.

Unrelated, but something I realized a couple weeks ago. CA has won a Worlds title every year, except 2005, 2010, and 2015, every 5 years. I was so sure they were gonna break that streak this year, but of course it had to continue.
So what I'm hearing is this is all CA's fault. They were too good this year, and the world knew the globe was coming, so the world had to stop them to continue the trend. If this is the result, then can CA take the 2025 season off?

Disclaimer for those that need it, I'm kidding of course.

I remember you mentioning this in 2015... I cannot believe it’s been 5 years, omg!!

Whelp, I just saw some would-be Worlds upgrades from SE. They were playing around with a full around release after the inversion and I guess trying to make it legal before the pandemic happened. And it looked pretty solid.

IDK if it would’ve been enough to win Worlds, but they were definitely being more aggressive with choreo than I thought they were :(

Was this the upgrade you were talking about?
