College Kentucky Cheer Dismisses 4 Coaches Following Hazing Investigation

It stresses me out to see grown folks defending this behavior as "kids being kids."

Sidenote: This is often why hiring younger alumnae cheerleaders to a coaching role isn't always the best option. See also: always hiring program grads and never switching it up. Problematic behavior tends to persist. Programs need at least one person who isn't from there, hasn't cheered there, etc. to put fresh eyes on things and interject "Um hey y'all wtf this is a bad idea as a high profile program." (Not that people always listen but still.)
i guess if it was something the school athletics program was paying for then, yes i can see the problem. But if was something put together and paid for by team members, coaches, would it still be labelled a school function??

idk i played in the band in college, and i cant count the amount of shenanigans that went on during travel functions and camps. Nothing extreme but definitely some beer drinking, hookups... yeah so, ill be curious to see how much is told in how present the staff really was. To fire the entire UK staff, seems extreme so i wonder how much they were really around for it all.

People need to stop dismissing “typical college behavior” . And then you wonder why kids behave the way they do. And that’s ok? It’s not. If what is in the report is true, the coaches were totally and completely responsible. Just because you didn’t know or weren’t sure , Or didn’t see it, is NO excuse. They are 2 steps ahead of you. I can let go the sexually explicit chant/song big deal. But to according to the report encouraged to do it a second time without clothes on and again while the coach/coaches were present , Debbie Love being implicated videotaping but then told to delete it. Disgusting. Even the underage drinking ok we all may have done it. The coaches were complicit. Last I checked Hazing was still illegal.

I can only speak for my experience coaching in K-12 schools but our AD considered something an official cheer event if it could be reasonably perceived as a school sponsored cheer event by outsiders (or could be presented as one in a lawsuit.)

Ex: The event could be a pool party in my home but if the team is there and I'm there, it could be perceived as a school-sponsored event by any reasonable outsider because I am an employee.

Or if I'm not there and say, my assistant allowed shenanigans, and someone was hurt, the case could be made in court that the event was school-approved because she was there, the team was there, and it was communicated to all team members.

Basically, in a lawsuit situation, the "this wasn't a school sponsored event" thing does not fly.

college kids being college kids is all i really took from this. I get college athletes are held to a higher standard, but the only foul play i see here is the coaches who stood around watching it.

And the coaches got fired for allowing, watching, inviting alumni to participate all while on a school sponsored trip.

So I think the school got it right.

Other things that do not fly when you work with kids or athletes in any capacity:

"Oh I wasn't there so I didn't know."

This whole situation sucks and especially the reason why the program was exposed - that part I have zero tolerance or respect for. However, in reading the official documentation from UK (versus social media or news reports), the coaches were responsible for a team during a team event which was paid for by the University. Whatever happened - it happened on the coach's watch. That is going to get a coach fired. There were also other completely different allegations regarding business dealings - which although may sound insignificant to some, are huge University violations.
I think the majority of college cheer programs just had a HUGE wake up call. And that's probably a good thing.

This brought me back to the boards.

Hearing some rumblings of a bad egg that is the root of all this. I'm too far removed to know much about it, but if anyone else does - should they have seen this coming?

Yes I have already seen names being called out as the whistle blower.

Just go to his Facebook page...he isn’t shy about who it is. I have no idea who that person is or the person he calls out but it seems like there have been problems in the past.

I was really confused because I remember from their tv show that their annual retreat is held over the summer. So whoever waited until after nationals to make a complaint?
