I am fascinated by how this works. That a a student can participate in a sport for a school that they do not attend. Does this happen with other sports and activities? In my area, middle and high school end at different times, run different busses and the physical buildings are a few miles apart from each other. After school practices could be logistically challenging.

1. I am not sure about other sports.
2. Usually the JV coach either sets a practice time that considers travel time and end time for MS, or allows/understands that MS kiddos will be a little late.

In our state, some of the smaller high school are actually middle/high schools. If there is one physical building and one set of administration, then 7th and 8th graders are eligible for JV and V.

My daughter coaches HS cheer and an 8th grader who does AS with her could of “petitioned/applied” to do HS if she wanted.

I coached a high school JV that was probably 80% middle schoolers. We practiced the same time as varsity, 5:30-7:30, so everyone came back to the school. Can't speak for most areas but it was very common in SC across a good number of sports. If you're talented enough they will put on you varsity as a 7th grader (if your parent approves of course)

Raising the junior age to 16(born 2004) is kind of ridiculous. I don’t know any (current) high school sophomores that would want to be on a junior team. You have to age out at some point. Not just for preference, but for appropriate age gaps within a team, as well as equity in tryout competition. Suzie won’t make Y3 if Becky who has been on it for several years won’t leave because she is suddenly eligible again. Even if Becky realistically should be on S3.
We have a group who was talking about this and jokingly said that the oldest on a junior team could pick up the kindergarten teammate and drive her to practice. Anyone who doesn't see a flaw to this age grid is either idiotic or has ulterior motives.
Given this huge age span for one division and the fact that youth teams are no longer eligible for the "real" Summit means there will be very few youth teams and 8,321,936 junior teams this upcoming season.

I left middle school 15 minutes early to make it to my JV practice; the MS principal had to sign off on this. We have one middle school across the yard from the high school, and one in a different town. There were five other eighth graders in cheer along with me (3 on JV, 3 on Varsity) that year. I was the only one from the “far” middle school, so the rest just walked across the fields and left about 5 minutes early, when HS practice was around when middle school ends. High school ends about an hour before middle school in my district. There was probably about 20 kids from my middle school and 5 or less from the other who were on a JV/V sport as an eigthth grader. But the year I was on a HS sport in middle school was the last year they allowed it, and now they only have “special exceptions” for when they can’t fill a JV team. It can work if the district makes it. It’s very common in the surrounding districts also. We never had 7th graders on the HS teams, they were on the MS teams along with the majority of 8th graders.

We r the ONLY district in our state that cant take middle schoolers onto varsity cheer...and I hate it it's so annoying. I am plenty skilled enough for it, as are many others, and it puts us at a big disadvantage. I really want to do HS and AS, but this rule is dumb.

This was my daughter last year. She was 11/turned 12. The teams available were Y2 J3 and S2. She didn’t want to be the oldest y2 OR youngest S2 but wasn’t ready to stunt J3.
She was picked For S2 - And was a bit lost socially. Hoping for a J team this year....
This was my daughter this year too, she was 11 then 12 on a S5 because they wanted her to fly but all of her friends were on the J5 team. It was hard because though they were a good group of kids, they were mostly 15-18 and were not remotely her peer group. She made the best of it, but is desperately hoping for J5 or J6 this year.

Our HS doesn’t allow MS kids. It’s also the only sport where squads are broken down by grade level. Freshman - freshman squad only, JV - 10 & 11, Varsity - 11 & 12 only. Other sports at the school a freshman can be picked for varsity

This was exactly how my highschool was.

The high school my daughter will go to is a free for all. No freshman team. 7&8 graders can cheer jv not varsity football but they can compete.

As a freshman you can be on varsity but only if you compete. My daughter doesn’t want to compete so as a freshman she will be jv even though in 6 grade she already has the dead mat skills for varsity. ‍♀️

That's really weird. It's not like that's where I live. We are the only district in the whole state that cant has middle schoolers in any high school cheer team. Every other district can pull 7th and 8th graders to JV or V. its very annoying and keeps us from having as much talent on our high school teams.

what skills does your varsity require for tumbling? Ours is tucks and above, preferably layouts and fulls. It's very annoying because i can't do hs, even though i have the skills. Not complaining, because i LOVE all-star cheer, but I wish I could do both

Around here it would be really weird to have MS kids on HS teams, except maybe in the very rural areas. The HS I went to and CP will probably be going to required a standing tuck when I went there, and had no shortage of HS students talented enough trying out. AS has exploded since then and I'd expect the talent pool has grown.
