Do you not enjoy themes? Or do you just not like the way that these gyms play them?

not all themes are bad. Some are. I feel like top gun themes are good. I loved my team's theme last year. We had a Latin, Spanish dancing themed routine. It was really fun to perform! Top gun always plays there themes good. I also enjoyed smoeds racecar theme from 18-19. If you play it right, themes can be good, and they can help you stand out. I will agree some gyms do not play themes well, but a great choreographer can really embrace the theme, and it makes a routine really fun to perform to!

I would totally be down for no more themes. Themed music I'm generally ok with. Props, uniforms (costumes, because some of them are), and excessively themed choreography is a big fat no. I think WCSS usually have the most tastefully done themes (2010 was probably my favorite), but even they sometimes take it a little too far for me, their earlier themes were done better than more recent ones IMO.

I think themes are fine, they just need to be done thoughtfully. I’m not a big fan of slapping any old theme on a routine. I like them to work on multiple levels and tie back into the identity of the team so it’s evident that thought was invested.

For example, my HS mascot was a cat, our primary color was red, and we were from CA. So we were constantly creating themes based on those factors (“Cat Scratch Fever,” “Wild Wild West,” etc.). So they worked on a few levels. We didn’t just copy/paste a cute idea onto a routine that otherwise made no sense.

I honestly think gym/team names could’ve benefited from some more thought in general. If I’m naming my gym Top Gun, I’m naming my teams after gun stuff, not cats (which might’ve flown better back in the 90’s than it would today, admittedly). And if I want my team names to have a celestial theme, then I wouldn’t name my gym World Cup, a term that brings to mind soccer.

That’s just me though. Obviously these gyms are doing just fine without my input.

I think themes are good when they are done thoughtfully. Having a good theme can make people remember your routine and have it stand out. Some of my favorite themes are smoeds race car theme, tglc's top gun theme, and my team theme from last season, a Spanish, Latino dancing theme. That being said, going to far with themes is a huge no-no, but I don't want themes to go away for good, just for teams to be more careful with themes.

This, all of this. I'd also love to see ECE M5 in Large (L5?). Also, would love to see a Small Senior 5 out of CA Plano again.
