Actually states do have the power to make a vaccine mandatory in an epidemic or threats to public health. The Supreme Court has already upheld it is not a violation of the 14th amendment.
cool, that's prob for the best in this case

This? People complain about wearing a mask but think about surgical team who have to wear them for hours. The hospital I work at requires all employees to wear masks during their shifts except when I’m the break room. Patients and visitors over the age of two must wearing them too. Working a trauma in a mask isn’t fun. Doing compressions with a mask on isnt fun. We do it to protect each other and our patients.

I hate when people say wearing a mask is too hard or too hot. I’m currently 33 weeks pregnant and wear one everywhere I go and it’s 100% humidity outside.

I'm sorry you feel this way. did not intend to be mean, but I have passed out in a mask. not fun at all. I just want my life back.

Hmm don't know why the image link didn't work. But the image stated...
" It's ok to wear life jacket, bike helmet, sunscreen, ear plugs, sunglasses or a seat belt when it protects us.

When asked to wear a mask to protect others it's an outrage.

Why are we making this so difficult?"

Wearing a bike helmet or sunscreen doesn't disrupt your normal functioning. But wearing a mask can. I can't imagine wearing a mask while exercising for hours in the summer heat. There are already enough kids with breathing difficulties, especially in hot weather, without obstructing their breathing further.

A mask can also make communicating difficult. If the mask muffles a coach's voice in any way, it will sometimes be difficult to hear what the coach is saying in a large gym. Yes, doctors/nurses have to wear masks all day long, but they're usually in air-conditioned rooms and only talk to people within a few feet of them.

People with hearing difficulties who rely on lip reading/facial expressions/etc to communicate are screwed if people's faces are covered. It's also more difficult to build rapport with people when you can't see facial expressions. I feel like I'm hiding behind a shield when I wear a mask. This can pose challenges when you're trying to get a large team to know each other and all work together safely.

I see pros and cons regarding mask wearing at cheer practice. I'm more mystified by the gyms that feel it's appropriate to hold large Team Reveal gatherings this season. These superfluous events could easily be done without. It's safer and more practical to email kids their team assignments instead of turning everything into a song and dance, especially during a pandemic. Some gyms are not only having large gym-wide gatherings, but they're openly posting about them without a care in the world. That feels more careless than the mask issue, which again, I can understand from both sides.

I worry about my daughter in a mask- she has a mild form of epilepsy and a 1 of her triggers is hyperventilating and she says she has a bit of trouble breathing in a mask. She hasn’t had to wear one for an extended period of time yet so not really sure if it will be an issue. I do need to figure out if it will
Be an issue before school starts.

There really aren't any physiological restrictions to breathing with a mask on. Sure, there are some psychological reasons (anxiety, claustrophobia, etc) that can manifest as a physiological response, but there isn't a valid direct relationship. I worked as a PT in a hospital a couple years ago, seeing patients daily with very, very severe lung disease. I'm talking days away from dying or lung transplants bad. Walking 50 feet down the hallway would put similar stress on their lungs as a healthy person running a marathon. Guess, what, these people would regularly wear masks with all activity with no change in their oxygen levels, since they were so sick that any kind of illness could be fatal. The inhalation of CO2 is soooo minute that it should not alter one's blood chemistry, especially in someone who is healthy. Medical professionals wouldn't purposely try to restrict someone's breathing further when it is already so severely compromised. Is it uncomfortable, sure. Does it take getting used to, absolutely.

This is primarily in regards to surgical or cloth masks. N95s are a bit different, but I really hope nobody is wearing one of those to a cheer practice.

Not trying to minimize anybody's experiences, just sharing my thoughts and what I've learned in the medical field.

This needs to be a pinned post!!

Where I’m from, you’d be frowned upon if you DIDN’T wear a mask at this point in time. And I live in the tropics!! I boulder with a mask on in a gym where there’s no A.C.

We have a responsibility to protect each other. Does it get uncomfortable? Sometimes, yes. But what’s worse is bearing responsibility for spreading a virus that could destroy someone else’s (or their family’s) life.

To all these people finding excuses for not wearing a mask, I want to pose a question.

How would you be able to live with yourself if you knew that you were the one that gave Covid 19 to a person who then died?

I don't ask this to be rude. I literally asked myself the same question while working as an essential employee for 4 months. I refused to go anywhere outside of my house and work because I have family members with health issues. So if you have the same, think for a moment on how it would make you feel if you knew it was you who gave them the disease that killed them? Would you decide then to wear a mask if it would save their life?

This isn't about making things difficult on you, or infringing on your rights, or whatever people are saying. It's about saving someone else's life.

thank you this is helpful!
I wasn’t sure if The mask would be an issue- now I know it will not!

And even if no one is forced, that doesn’t mean it’s not a cure? There might be a cure, which some people will refuse. Well that’s what we call natural selection?

In the meantime I think masks are safer than no masks. Sorry you have such a hard time with them. Not you atxmom.

People have a hard time on ventilators too. Or living with lung damage.
masks are obviously safer than no masks, but the safest would be not to stunt/cheer in general right now.

numbers are rising again. Things are shutting down again. At this point- what are these teams even practicing for? Cause I’m thinking there won’t be competitions this year anyway.

Just thinking out loud here......we are still far from a vaccine. And we are SO much further from it being available to us regular people. The "vaccine phase" is literally several years out.

anyone have any info on this type of mask? I’m a little worried about the bottom right pic of air coming out. Doesn’t that defeat purpose of wearing a mask?
Sorry if this is wrong place for my post. I wasn’t sure if is appropriate here or if I should start a new thread.

Edit: pic didn’t show up. But it’s one of the ones with a circle vent

what if you gave someone the flu??? How would you feel if they died from that? How is that any different from giving someone the corona. Lots of things in this world to fight, and we are trying to fight something we can't even see.

Oh boy, I'm trying real hard not to just come at people in this thread because I have stuff to do, but I can't not say something here. I left my anecdote a few pages back but in case you skipped it, I've had both the flu and corona. Only one hospitalized me, put me on an emergency ventilator, and brought me to what felt like the brink of death (spoiler alert - it was COVID-19). I've had pneumonia, strep, bronchitis...basically any illness that you can list off I've had, and never once did I think that any of those would do me in. In fact, I still went to work as a high school math teacher and taught while I had all of those. Unpleasant, but doable.

Corona, however, I couldn't even leave my bed when I was in the midst of it. For over a week I had to be carried to the bathroom and basically waited on hand and foot by my husband, especially because this was back in mid-March and nobody knew how to handle this yet (28th case in my state). Nothing else has ever affected me in such a profound way and made me feel so weak, I would not wish that experience on anybody. So basically this was a very roundabout way to bring me to my final point: stop comparing corona to the flu, it is not the same thing as the flu. Yes the flu is bad and very much not-fun to deal with, but it is nowhere near as serious as this virus. Yes we all want the world to go back to normal, but not before we have a decent handle on this.
