I wonder in an all virtual reality the role of FloCheer. Once a video is submitted, who owns the content, has rights to distribute it and how can it best be distributed? It could be very engaging or ho-hum depending on how everything is organized, produced, etc.

The following <article> touches on virtual broadcasting (below is from the virtual section). I'm definitely not a tech person, but I would imagine if CNN and ABC struggle with video streamed via home broadband, this is Varsity's ultimate dilemma with virtual live competitions.

The remote approach is already being taken by broadcasters like CNN and ABC News. But even some of the broadcast networks are struggling when they don’t have the right setup to support parts of their news programs, sometimes resulting in bad audio, drop-outs and picture issues for video interviews streamed via home broadband—which is a “best effort” solution. The fact that most home broadband connections are geared towards the downstream and not uplinks is one of the major challenges with this setup.

I know it sounds silly, but I hope they still offer things like T-shirts for sale online at the virtual competitions if they go that route. My daughter loves her cheer shirts from competitions.

lets not give flocheer any ideas. I can easily see them taking great advantage of this whole thing, and turning it into a crap show.
ill always be a fan of free content, especially if the gyms are the one having to do the recording and live feed, why should flocheer get to step in and control that?!??
if the gyms are the ones doing the recording, flocheer shouldnt be able to claim copyright.
Ha, I hope I am not giving anyone any ideas and I don't disagree with you on principle. I'm optimistic that these issues are being fully fleshed out now so we don't have any surprises as it seems more likely every day that live events are improbable (at least in the northeast). There have been moments in years past I've been surprised by what I am not allowed to film live, post online etc. and if it is still considered a Varsity event this might not be as black and white as we hope. As an aside, it would seem a lost opportunity to me if we just get thousands of videos posted on youtube and some winners announced at the end? I'd hope for more of an organization, cataloging, or "event"? Are we really going to try and replicate a competition based on who registered for that event or take a more broad approach, eg J3 Sunday, LAG Saturday etc.

Thank you for this, I agree it is not as simple as it sounds and also not exactly their competency.

I agree that livestream is just a logistical nightmare. Our governor livestreams his press conference's on youtube, twitter and facebook and sometimes my connection drops out. And there are connection issues every time. It's just not reliable

But that’s live streaming to a bunch of people. This would just need to be like a FaceTime call between the gym and the judges. But then no one else would be able to watch... It could work for small comps maybe.

So would we assume all comps will be a one and done this season? Would that change the idea of a wildcard versus at large bid (assuming they are co side ring any sort of summit, even virtual)? So many things to consider!

I’m thinking that if you had competitions in each state every couple of months, rotating sites, teams could come to one and be recorded performing live on the same stage, one and done (and maybe also judged live). Let teams choose one of those recordings to submit for bigger comps, like NCA, CheerSport, etc, to be judged by a different panel, so teams that did more comps would have more recordings to choose from, but would still be submitting a one and done. Bids could be given based on those competitions for either a virtual Summit or an in person one if, by May, it is reasonable to do one, with there still being a possibility of a paid bid from the big competitions.

That way there is more standardization and would more replicate the pressure of a competition, and it should still be relatively safe, and avoid the need to quarantine for 2 weeks on return since comps would be more local. I know this wouldn’t work as well for more sparsely populated areas, but maybe something could be worked out where Varsity has someone come out and record those gyms closer to home so those videos could be judged.

I remember them saying the reason for not doing a live feed is that it would be excluding some gyms that just plain don’t have a strong enough internet connection. I know our gym could afford that, but there are some gyms, especially here in Deep South Arkansas, that wouldn’t be able to pull off a strong enough internet’s connection. There would be lagging and freezing constantly.

Even on the feed yesterday, my feed froze too and I think my connection is just fine.

the could possibly judge the competition through video submission or live stream in private, THEN release content to fans and general public later... that seems like the only route i can see them taking. Although video submission makes it easier for teams to take advantage of a one and done scenario, and cheating, etc.

Picking the best video is not a competition......cant c paying $$ for that.

i mean the teams could submit video with whatever format varsity/usasf comes up with privately, but it wouldnt be open to the public to view till later, when possibly flocheer comes in edits it and compiles it into a better format to watch. I cant see them doing a livestream for anyone and everyone, that seems like too much of a logistical nightmare. But a livestream to just a panel of judges in order to be judged fairly, and then the video is released later seems more possible.

Maybe not as cost effective for IEPSs, but there are Varsity reps in every state. If there is a concern about live feed, then assign a rep to each gym competing and have them video their live performance. The gym can have each team perform and the rep can attest that there was no redo and have the video footage to either be used as back-up for the live feed or to submit for judging.

That’s a thought. Though that pesky question would remain as to who owns the material?
