As a parent who bought a new uni this year I agree. I am still furious about it. And my daughter ages out of the division next year- so it’s a one a done.

That's unfortunate.

Random question: I know schools do uni rental pretty regularly if they aren't a "buy it keep it" school. (Basically uni belongs to the school and you return it end of season.)

Is that a thing in all stars?

Or are you always expected to purchase (either brand new or at a resale?)

As an HS coach I don’t understand teams that buy new comp unis every season. They use it a maximum of what, six times a year? In a busy year? It’s nothing more than some pretty obscene conspicuous consumption and I think it’s so silly for a program to expect that from parents.

I've seen school cheer costs rivaling that of all star programs once you get into purchasing:

* a new comp uni every season.
*a new gameday uni every season.
*new campwear every season.
*new practicewear every season.
*extras like new warm ups every season.
*different shoes every season.

(Don't get me started on ordering both camp and practicewear instead of repurposing campwear for practicewear all season.)

Not sure about other gyms but ours typically wears a uni for 2 years and you buy it. It’s not like you can even re-sell them to other girls most of the time because they replace on often. I wish our gym had all the teams wear the same uniform (with the addition of mesh for the jr- below teams). Would be more cost efficient for parents (especially crossovers). I spent 1600 on cheer clothes the past 2 seasons.

I can definitely see where having a program uni for everyone but Worlds teams is a cost-saver for sure. Ex: CA, Cali, Rays, Rockstar. Nothing exciting but it is nice to know that you can re-use same uni unless the child grows or the program uni changes.

There are gyms at which every single team has its own uniform with new ones every other year, which is fine for one team but I don't know how people manage uni purchases for (example) sometimes 2 or 3 teams!

Sometimes those teams even have their own unique practicewear outside the standard issued ones from the program. It's a bit much in a regular year but excessive during covid season.

My school does school unis that the team uses and re-uses each year. Kids don't buy their own uniform. I think most school in my area do that, but I can't speak for all of them.

As for all-star, I usually have to buy mine, but I have been on Worlds teams in the past where uniforms were rented, trying to keep the cost down for older athletes (up in Canada, so most of us don't age out at Senior and a good chunk of our Worlds/Open teams are University aged adults paying for cheer on their own.

My gym this year did get new uniforms for everyone. I believe three last ones were about 3 years old, and most kids had outgrown their current ones and they were starting to show the wear, and would have needed to buy new ones anyways. I believe parents requested new ones when they were asked during parent meeting for these reasons. Also, all the open/Worlds teams are needing to make the switch from crops to full tops :( anyway, and since so many of these were old and starting to show wear anyway, the decision was made to go with new uniforms. Pretty sure these will be used for the next 3 years again too.

I'm guessing some gyms feel pressure to keep up with the ever-changing uniform trends, Covid or not. There are so many "Reveals" these days for things that could really be kept more low-key... it creates pressure to keep coming up with something new. If you've had a uniform for 3 or 4 years already, you feel like you have to get new one. And then there are the teams that have separate Day 1 and Day 2 uniforms, which is insane.

But if there are a lot of new kids on a team, it makes some sense to get new uniforms now instead of holding off until next season--- so that there aren't a ton of kids buying 2 uniforms in 2 years.

And for every parent who wants their Mini Level 1 to compete in a T-shirt/shorts this season because it's ridiculous to buy a uniform during a pandemic, there's another parent who thinks it's unfair that her Mini doesn't have the same looking uniform as her gym's Senior teams. Cheer families range from extremely wealthy to "I can't afford this at all, but my kid is cheering anyway", which makes it even more impossible to please everyone.

I don't get going overboard with practice wear--- in any year, not just during Covid. Does it matter what T-shirt and sports bra they have on this year? It will be a miracle just to get all 50 states practicing; wear whatever you want at this point. You can tell some gyms spend excessively on practice wear whereas others are more reasonable and only have a few basic required items.

It’s simply a money grab by many gyms. They are charging parents 2-3x the actual cost of those uniforms. Two gyms buy uniforms from the same company with similarly intricate designs and amounts of bling. Gym A charges parents $250 and Gym B charges parents $550. That difference is not because the prices of the actual uniforms vary that much, it’s an easy cash grab. If you’ve been at multiple gyms or know parents from other gyms you’ll realize that the gyms looking out for their families also have uniform buy back/resell programs to help keep costs down for those who need to purchase a different size or kids new to the program in an “off” uniform year. The cash grab gyms usually don’t, they require everyone buy a new uniform and don’t facilitate any kind of reselling for kids needing a different size or whose dog ate their skirt or whatever.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, I just do not like when teams get uniforms that don't have their gym colors anywhere on it, like the Gossip Girl ones. I don't even like them putting a little, like Ladycats, but for some reason (with the exception of maybe Lady Jags) it is just a weird, personal pet peeve of mine that I know few people agree with. With that being said, minus the Lady Lightning themed uniform (ick), all of these uniforms are gorgeous, it's just the color schemes I dislike.

I couldn't even tell what the name was on gossip girls was at first. I love thunder uniform.

I...

Okay. I get the point of LL's uniforms. But the end product feels cliché to me. There is nothing glamorous happening in hospitals right now. I understand it is meant as a tribute though.

Love the old school vibe on Ladycats. I would have loved the pink to "pop" a bit more, but it is cute.

As for GG, the purple is too dark. The same gets lost in the darkness, sadly. A more neon-ish pink-ish purple would have been gorgeous.
