ummm...i really hope this isn't true. Like really really really hope. I love rob.
what has this world become

I've commented this before, but I will say it again.

This is exactly the reason for the age grid to change. Open teams should be 18+.

There’s no reason a 14 year old should be on a team with a 27 year old. Not saying that’s what happened here at all but it opens the door for predators when we allow such a large age gap where minors are interacting with adults.

You’re sticking full fledged adults who have gone to college, can go to bars, who have adult jobs and are living on their own with kids who can’t even drive yet. And then encourage them to team bond, attend events together and be in the same group chats/GroupMes.

Then there’s the obvious part of cheer where you are constantly touching due to stunting and such. And in the cheer world, there is such a focus on these young kids to look and act older than they really are. (i.e the makeup, the uniforms, the choreo) It’s just such a terrible combination.

I see the point you're making but it's not limited to just open teams.

Techincally, an 18 year old or 19 year old can be on ANY senior all star team.

There are 18+ folks on many Worlds teams (heck, some colleges reguarly have their athletes super senior on them) and I'd assume there are 18+ on some senior non-Worlds too.

The issue:

Gyms and USASF typically KNOW about this behavior and do not report.

See also: If you're not tied to a gym and doing camps/choreo on your ownm, it allows for pervs to "fly under the radar" as they are going from gym to gym and no one is really monitoring.

See also: if kids say something, people are quick to dismiss because "omg he would never."

Bottom line: Abusers are good at putting on the Wholesome I Would Never face. It's how they make victims. They also groom parents, other coaches, etc. using the same tactics. They aren't going to ACT CREEPY. That's too obvious. The goal is to make everyone think "How dare you he would never!"

I'm really surprised...he didn't seem the type. But as they say, it's the people you least expect. I hope cheer becomes more positive and these things stop happening. It also sucks because I feel like this is giving cheer a bad rep, even though this is really a great sport with a lot of amazing people. Unfortunate though, there are bad apples out there, but the cheer community as a whole is great. I really hope this doesn't keep kids out of the sport, and I hope we see the cheer community continue to improve

Unfortunately, this has been going on for a long time and is incredibly under-reported. Gyms have been sweeping it under the rug for a very long time. People are only just now feeling okay with speaking up.
