I'm about to shock you all, Sweden just released the age grids for next season and Junior Elite (J6) is up to 18. Granted you can't be 6 on a junior team, not even on a youth team..

They upped the ages this year so teams can stay intact for next season, because you know, covid.. You're also not allowed to officially compete under the age of 12, just exhibition. And all senior teams are open.

This is also because we're working towards a more international sport status, looking at other sports like biathlon and cross country skiing you're still a "junior" at age 23..

1. Eighteen is old, but it looks like Junior in Sweden mirrors (give or take a few years) the SENIOR grid in America so it is more acceptable.

Also, am I correct in reading that cheer does not start til you are 12 there? What opportunities do kids under 12 have for cheer?

2. I FEEL LIKE "MASTER" DIVISION IS A MUCH COOLER DESCRIPTOR WORD FOR OLDER CHEERLEADERS THAN "OPEN TEAM." Can we get Les and USASF to change it? THE VOICEOVER POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS.

An athlete fall/tumbling bust on the standing full for T&S Diamonds.
Whats with the Diego (Dora the explorer) reference ? They're a senior team lol

so late to this party but I saw diamonds a few months back and I really dislike the Dora theme- I’m
Not a huge theme fan I. General but this is ridiculous.

So no competitions under 12 years old? That might work in biathlon, but cheer is a sport you have to learn when you're young. It's also easier to tumble and fly when you're young. I don't think they should try to put cheer in the same category as cross country skiing where ages tend to skew much older. But I had heard about some European countries doing that to keep pressure off young kids, allow them to try a wide variety of sports, etc.

Also, I think it's a real longshot for cheer to end up in the Olympics, but if we ever want a chance of that happening, we probably eventually need a universal age grid (and not 384025 divisions) instead of every country doing their own thing.

im kinda surprised by how lackluster TGLC dance is this year compared to so many previous years.... i think cheersport is the first time i noticed it.

Yeah I would disagree here on the "cheer NEEDS to be learned young standpoint.

While it might be easier to learn tumblingskills when you're younger,stunting/being a flyer can definitely be taught from age 12 and up.
More than enough teams here that take their new members and make them in succesful cheerleaders that can compete with flyers/stunters that have done it for years.

It isn't as easy but definitely worth the work if you truly want to learn the sport.

We don't have the same age grids as Sweden currently has though..
Tiny 4-6
Mini 6-8
Youth 8-11
Junior 12-16
Senior 15+

If cheer goes to the Olympics what do you think it would look like?
I think it would be closer to STUNT or UCA style. I don’t think it would look anything Allstar as we know it now.

Allstars routines use to required a cheer portion until 2004.
It seemed to stick around in international rules for longer than that! I remember still doing one in 2010. But I really do miss having a wee chant in the middle of a routine, allowed you to have a second to breathe!

Ahh that makes sense. It just doesn't seem to fit in with allstar cheer at all. I'm definitely curious how a gym like Cheer Athletics would decide which kids do the "cheering" in Global, and which are just on an International team.

The international/U divisions have a different age grid, for example -
U17 Level 1 = 2003-2011
Junior Level 1 = 2004-2014

U19 Level 1 = 2001-2007
Senior Level 1 = 6/1/01-2008
