I got in this discussion today and I was wondering what you all thought! :)

Do you think people should learn a standing tuck in a way that would easily tack onto a toe touch?
...i dont think that made any sense DX

What I'm saying is, when cheer coaches are teaching standing tucks, should they just teach it in the easiest way possible for a particular tumbler, or do you think you should teach a standing tuck in a way that it would most easily be pulled after a toe touch?
I think toe tucks are a generic cheer skill in pretty much all realms of cheer that all high level cheerleaders should shoot for, so I feel like standing tucks should be taught with the knowledge that a jump will go before it kept in mind.....did that make more sense?

Okay I think I understand? Is what you're asking: should coaches teach standing back tucks in whatever way is easier for the tumbler to learn it or should they teach it after a jump as that's how it's going to be as they level up??

theoretically if you have a good back tuck then you should be able to tuck from any jump ad long as one maintains proper form and technique. However I feel like this isn't always the case as someone might have bad form in either jumps or thrie nck tuck which keeps them from completing the skill. A toe tuck is one of the minimum standing tumbling rewirements for level 5 howeva also the easiest skill to perform. So if one would ne learning a tuck with jumps in mind I think I would rather they learn it from a Moe difficult jump than a toe touch. Just because chances are that they will need to do a toe tuck and some point but they will also have to do pike/hurdler tuck. Etc. If one can tuck from that they can tuck from anything.
But answer your question I don't think it's necessary to be taught with jumps in mind.. If one intends on leveling up then they already know they need to jump. It should be taught the right way. period.if you are taught a proper tuck to begin with there shouldn't be an issue with jumping.
I think? Idk if I answered your question and I kinda rambled on. Haha

If a tuck is taught correctly.... putting a toe touch in front of it should not change anything. Once you have one 90% of my kids can throw a toe back at the same time.

The girl we were watching started with her hands above her head, she then swung down, and then lifted and jumped.
(I think it might be how gymnasts do it)

I thought they should try to break her of the habit because eventually shed have to jump before it and it wouldnt be possible with that swing.

That is how gymnasts prep for one. Kind of like how a lot of cheerleaders prep in a low v.

Yeah, but she's a cheerleader now. She's level 4 now, but I still feel like she should try to break the habit...does that explain things better? Ive seen whole gyms who tuck like that

Not everyone will become a level five athlete. It's certainly more important to learn a basic skill properly instead of using it just to get ready for the next level.

I would have her break that habit just by teaching her to start with her arms down and swing back then bringing them up for the set. As far as teaching the tuck like you are doing it out of a jump I don't think its a good idea. I'm big on proper progression- Clean consistent standing tuck first, toe backs later...

This thread could make Debbie Love cry...
you are so right! haha i just think that a normal, level 4 tuck should be learned first. then, toe-back drills, like t jumps to tucks, or starting with your arms in a T then swinging for the tuck. If your tuck is good, a jump to tuck should not be hard to master. plenty of other cheerleaders learned a regular tuck then a toe back and are doing just fine!

I do the same thing as the girl does when she is going to do her standing tuck. I raise my arms up, swing them down and jump up and tuck. However, when it comes to doing a jump before it, I adapt easily, it's no big deal.
