Youth 5 teams should stick around! How would you feel if you were on a youth level 5 team, and your team had to drop out and compete on your gym's junior 5 team. It would not be fair to the little ones that have a lot of skill for their age and not be able to throw it because junior 5 doesn't need there talent. It just doesnt seem fair to me. IMO

I would be happy the cheer w/ older kids. Youth kids look up to the older kids. I think they would enjoy cheering on jr 5. At least they can still cheer. Who says Jr 5 wouldn't need their talent? Really? I'm sure the more talent, the better. I think the youth kids would still get a chance to shine. The younger kids are the ones I see now crossing over to jr & sr teams to make them look better..

The Y5's will move up to Junior, making it really unsafe for them competing on a team of 14 year olds.

Taking away the division for 'safety reasons' makes no sense.

What's unsafe about cheering w/ teens? They have more experience. The older kids would be basing small flyers, which would be very easy for them. There is a lower chance of flyers hitting the floor when older kids are basing younger kids. Seems pretty safe to me.

There would suddenly be a HUGE influx of J5 teams to accommodate all these youth kids with fulls. I don't really understand the safety issue. Being on a youth 5 team is no different that training to be an elite gymnast. I heard on Youtube that they had already decided to take it away. Does anyone know if this is true, or is it still on the table?

Ehh gymnastics and cheerleading are completely different. Gymnasts don't stunt & cheerleaders have nothing in common with gymnasts except tumbling. Plus gymnasts have better training when it comes to tumbling. I def wouldn't consider a youth five cheerleader an elite gymnast. Just because you can spin doesn't mean it's pretty.

I don't think that older kids are more or less likely to catch her. I think that it's a smaller person, a larger height, and a 9 year old is gonna have trouble bonding with a 15 year old. She can look up to her, she can ask for advice, but it's hard to keep conversation going with someone half a generation younger.

Also I doubt that gyms would have youths flying, juniors basing. I think the smart ones would have 2 junior teams (if that's allowed in the US, I wouldn't know.) One with youth, one with junior so that when the juniors turned 16, they will have great flyers and bases for senior. In short, the teams won't change, just the division.

Thanks for disagreeing, can we agree to disagree?<3

Sure, I respect your opinion too.

I completely understand cheerleading and gymnastics are very different. I'm just saying that in terms of stress to your body's joints, and risk of injury, which i think is the original reason for outlawing Y5, it's no greater for a twelve year old cheerleader, than a twelve year old gymnast going elite.

Okay, now I understand where you're coming from. I agree w/ you. I would hope that the youth 5 debate is also about stunting safety. Youth kids have very bad stunting technique. I can't stand seeing youth 5 kids attempt a kick double when it's obvious they don't have a decent kick full. Lot's of youth kids can throw a double, but imo most of those doubles are chucked & landed horribly. Those are the kind of things that lead to injury. I think stress on the body for a youth cheerleader is equal to a youth gymnast but, I also think a youth gymnast is less likely to get injured throwing a double than a youth cheerleader.

There are so many sports for youth that put stress to your boy's joints, so I don't think that would be the only reason to get rid of youth 5.

Other than Jamfest, I don't think I ever seen a youth 5 team. In fact, we rarely encounter youth 4 teams.

so true!!! my gym as a youth 4 and this weekend is the first time all season they will have another team in their division...and we started our season in october

Youth 5 should totally stay around!! I was on a youth 5 team twice. I support them because its a place where youth kids can be lvl 5 without all the older kids. Plus, you can keep that group together an then they are a killer senior 5.

The young kids with the ability to compete level 5 should be allowed to compete level 5. There's this girl at my gym and she is 6, competed whip bhs whip bhs layout, has her two and a full, toe back... just no level 5 team for her here. she's so small and talented.
