My school has gone to camp almost every year of it's existence. This has been my first year, on the team and quite frankly, we've paid over 200 dollars to go to a camp that teaches us absolutely nothing. I paid to learn nothing but stupid jumps and cheers that I doubt those college cheerleaders even use.

Does your school go to camp and if they do, is it worth it?

I LOVED camp when I was in high school. Even though we didn't use a lot of the cheers & stunts we learned it's a great bonding experience for the whole team and I love meeting other teams!

It's more than just the material. Our school never used much aside from maybe one dance and one chant, but from the beginning of camp to the end of camp we progressed so much teamwork and stunting wise. Having evaluations each day as well as competing at the end of camp was great for pushing our team and uniting us. Plus, so many memories are made during camp!
Also,I don't know what company your team uses, but your school should look into a skills or home camp perhaps(NCA has them) if you dont use any of the material at all. That way you can work on what you need to and pick and choose what you want to do.

I work for a company that does customizable private camps. You can completely skip cheers and dance and simply stunt and tumble, and I think it's totally worth it.

Don't get me wrong, i love camp! It brought all of us together and it was so much fun! We've had the same uniforms since our school opened 10 years ago and we already pay almost 600 dollars to be on the team. I'd rather pay for new uniforms than go to a camp that teaches us nothing. I mean, they taught us the 9 jump hahah. I love seeing how we compare to other teams and the bonding, but I would rather pay for the new uniforms and other things we desperately need.

We do a "camp" at the allstar gym where we practice and we just go in from like 9-3 for 3 days and thats when we teach all of the new girls the cheers and band dances and we start working on our competition routine. That works really well for us because we get to bond as a team because we're together for so long, and we get ALOT done since there aren't a million other cheerleading squads there.

What is your company?

I've been looking for a camp thats worth the price, amazing staff, but focuses on stunting, jumps, and tumbling of all levels.

We also do private camps at a gym. 3 days 9 - 3 and all we do is learning the competition routine, stunt and tumble. To still get the camp feel we stay at a hotel for the 2 nights. We stopped going to traditional camps for the same reason - its kind of a waste of money!

Some school team coaches take their kids to camp to help compensate for their lack of creativity and skill training. I'm not saying that in a bad way. I actually think it's a good thing. If the coach doesn't know how to teach a skill, it's a good thing they take their kids somewhere to learn. If a coach doesn't have a bag of cheers/dances laying around, they go to camp and get some new material. This theory works great for new coaches and beginner athletes.

This doesn't always work with more advanced school teams, but i do know a few who take their kids to NCA camps, learn lots of material in a short time, and take their teams to NCA competitions and do well. (Not endorsing NCA, just and example)
I guess it really depends on the reason the coach is selecting the particular camp they are choosing for the kids.

The big companies (UCA, NCA) do this too. They call them private camps and they are completely customizable. I used to work for UCA and I did these all the time. They will show you a "typical" schedule, but you can really tailor your camp to whatever you want.

For NCA they're called home camps. There are also skills camps that are like normal camps (with other teams all at the same location, etc.) but do not teach curriculum. It focuses only on skill improvement.

I only attended home camps in high school, and I think all 4 years we went with a different company. Home camps are wonderful. We had plenty of chants/cheers (our coaches were really creative), jump drills and parnter stunts but needed pyramids and stunt transitions. Most of the camp focused on these 2 skills and were very productive.

At my school, we bring in a stunt group of cheerleaders from Rutgers University. They teach us a few new stunts, new cheers, new dances and new pyramids as well as little tips to help jumps. Its a great way to do camp because its local so each night everyone can get a good nights sleep and come back the next day refreshed.

The NCATA, Acrobatics and Tumbling, universities offer summer camps....and think quite a few of them will do a home camp....what town are you in?
