I notice it's very common to see male cheerleaders fly in basket tosses in the NCA but in the UCA, the only time male cheerleaders fly are in certain pyramids such as the 2-1 liberty and the 4-3-2 Swedish Falls in which he is supported by two male bases while holding the two top girls' ankles. What do you think?

UCA is a very traditional style, the girls fly the guys base they are very strict on that look. I dont think you will see guys flying in UCA become a trend anytime soon. Personally i prefer seeing only girls fly cuz to me if u have 3 girl baskets go up in the air and one guy, that to me says that you didn't have a girl capable of doing the 4th basket. Which in my eyes makes the team look weaker than a team with 4 girls doing the same basket.

I notice that Louisville and SFA often have guys fly in basket tosses. I heard that SFA is performing four double full twisting basket tosses in their routine. One of the baskets featured one of their male cheerleaders flying in that basket.

hmmm....im not to sure about that one...ive seen SFA's large and small coed preform their routine twice now and i have not noticed a male flyer flying a basket on either team. I may have missed it but im not to sure. And I am well aware that guys fly baskets in NCA, i was talking about the UCA style.

The most that you will see in UCA (in terms of male flyers) is them being at prep level.

I think you are referring to TVCC.

Actually you've seen Louisville have a guy in a basket a total of 2 times... once in 2009 and once in 2010. That in my opinion does not count as "often". FYI his name is Joey and he can do any basket you could possibly think of. I'm completely unsure about SFA but I have seen Oklahoma State and HPU have guys in baskets.

While I do agree UCA has a more "traditional" (whatever that means considering NCA has been around A LOT longer than UCA) approach to competitive collegiate cheer and NCA is more of a true performance with everyone ALWAYS doing something as opposed to the long pauses or being set between skills and much slower pace to the routines at UCA.

To your original question I'm not a huge fan of guys flying whether it be NCA or UCA. But when you have a talent like Joey Mastrocola who can do flawless pike open doubles or arabian 1.5's etc, why wouldn't you use it if you've got the right time or place in the routine? The only place on the NCA score sheet that is specifically calls for a specific gender is in the "girls dance and motions"

Here's a question for you? What happens next year when Oklahoma State puts a girl (Cheyenne) on the floor who can stunt and they include her in the routine in a stunt sequence?

Definitely. I saw Louisville's routine and yeah, I saw that guy you're talking about. Unlike my Kentucky cheerleaders, I'm not familiar with the Louisville cheerleaders or their names. And I'm also not familiar with the Ok State cheerleaders and so I don't know the guy who flew in one of their baskets.

guys flying in baskets are the best and sometimes do it better then the girls. . . . These teams i know for sure have had guys in baskets. . .

That to me says that you had a really kick a** guy who could do it better than the girls. If anything I think it makes the team look stronger because they can throw a guys just as high as a girl. It shows adversity on the team. Anyways.... What about the other differences between UCA and NCA? There are a lot. Like UCA routines don't have tumble passes. And at UCA I don't notice fliers pulling back flex skills like scorpions and scales as much. Its mostly stretches and libs. Why do some schools go to one over the other?

In UCA hopefully you will never see a guy fly in a basket or anything for that matter, other than pyramids or anything like that which really isn't even flying it's being a middle layer. But to answer your question about UCA and NCA with flyers not pulling the flexibility skills, it's more just because the different companies showcase different things. Like you said, in NCA it's more of a show, like an all star routine, the emphasis is placed more on the flyer in the air doing the skill rather than on the guy. In NCA there are only 2 grips for a guy, lib grip and cupie (awesome) grip. Even when the girl is in a side facing stunt (arabesque, scorp, scale) they hold a lib grip with the base faced to the side. In UCA the emphasis is placed more on the fact that the guy is getting the girl up there a variety of different ways (by himself) and holding different grips, lib grip, torch grip, cupie grip, whatever. Normally, in NCA there is a spotter that is a lot more involved with the stunt then in UCA. UCA usually the spotter is only there out of necessity of rules rather then the fact that he is actually helping keep the stunt in the air. The emphasis is taken off the flyer who only usually does lib, stretch, cupie or arabesque, and placed more on the guy. In UCA because they are only allowed to compete 16, they are usually forced to both tumble and stunt. I cheered for University of Kentucky and whenever I visited friends at U of L they'd ask if I was a tumbler or stunter. I'd always answer that I was a cheerleader. LoL, we do both. I had a double full and a full up one arm. Most of the differences between the guys in NCA and then in UCA are that in NCA you can be a big guy that can't throw a standing back, but can house up a stunt, and a little guy that can double double double double double double all over the place that couldn't do a toss hands. Now I can't dance or jump which is why I stayed my butt in UCA. It really is just personal preference with styles. In a UCA routine, we just do skills: stunts, tumbling, baskets, pyramids, and I love it like that. I would probably have never continued with cheerleading if I didn't have the choice not to dance or jump. Hope that answers your question.

Definitely. At the UCA College Nationals, it's nine men and seven woman whereas in the NCA College Nationals, it's eleven men and nine women.
