I think it was like 3 years ago on a webcast - James Speed said something along the following lines:

"If USASF came out with a rule, that you could ONLY have red heads on a Level 5 team, I would dye everyones hair"

Basically, what I took out of his quote - You do what you gotta do to do well, and still be inside the guidlines. As a coach - Its easier to teach a smaller girl how to do elite level 5 skills than an 18 year old 'high school flyer'

No matter what team, or what gym, large or small, or what kid, I don't think 12 year olds belong on a senior team. Ever. I know it does happen, but 12 is simply too young to hang around girls that age. They hear everything from bad words to parties to boyfriends. Things they shouldn't be exposed to at that age. It can cause them to feel left out (because they don't understand what "sloshed" or " 3rd base" means) or try to act older (makeup at a younger age, older clothes) to be more like their older friends. While I understand they are at the gym, they are still hanging around with girls and boys 4+ years older. If it were outside of cheer would you let them say, go to the mall with 15-18 year olds? They still have plenty of years left for their chance to shine at Worlds

i think it truly depends on the make up of the team. If its mainly 16 - 18 year olds and only 1 12 year old then yeah a 12 year old doesn't belong. But if there are 3 12 yr olds, 4 13 yr olds, 4, 14 yr olds, 5 15 yr olds, 2 16 yr olds and 2 17 yr olds then yes a 12 year does belong.

I agree, those circumstance are more acceptable. But how often does that really happen?

Just want to say that my posts were talking about ALL senior teams, not just L5

my thing is.. if they're old enough and have the skills.. and want to be on a lv 5 and can handle *mentally & attidue wise* being on a high level competitive team why not?!?!
even if they're a fetus size its not their fault their small blame the parents LOL!!!

If your 12 and an amazing gymnast should you be allowed to go to the olympics? Or if your a superstar soccer player, should you be able to make the world cup soccer team? No, because rules are set up to protect kids, and help them progress naturally. Just becuase you have the talent doesn't mean you need to show it off imeadiatly. I was on a senior team, and in my stunt group there was a 12 year old, 2 17 year olds, and an 18 year old. Thats not right, or fair for the older or younger kids. Kids should be with kids around their age. If one is going to middle school and one is going to college, does this really look right?

Love this!! Thankyou couln't agree with you more!

Maybe I'm not understanding this, but how can anyone on a youth team be eligible for a Worlds Sr 5 team? My CP was the oldest on her youth squad and her birthday was September 6th, so she turned 12 6 days after the cut-off. Because of that 6 day issue, she wasn't even eligible to be on a Sr 5 team. I would think the same would hold true for anyone on a youth team?

I was told that the is a "grace period" for the aug 31st cutoff date. So if you turn 12 say on sept 10 you can still compete on a worlds team even though you missed the aug 31st cutoff. I dont know if this is true, but last year I know of someone who didnt turn 12 until after aug 31st and we were told she could be on Sr 5 (not an open 5) because of this "grace period" and she did compete at worlds. Has anyone else ever heard of this???

They deff should change the age limit, i say 14-18. Actual high school aged kids. Then you can see who has the talent. Obviously we would all hit if we had 12 year old flyers.

If there was a grace period then what's the point of a cut-off?

If a team used a kid that was born on September 1, 1998 at 12:01 am, then they are too young and should not have been competing at worlds.

With all of that being said, someone would have to turn that team/individual in, AND the USASF would have to call them on it. At this point neither seem very likely.

It probably happens a lot more often than there being only one 12 year old among a bunch of highschoolers. I don't think we've ever had more than about 6 girls who were too old for juniors on our Senior teams and we're now going into our 4th year

Anyone of know if a 12 year old was on a Worlds team for their abililty to base? We always talk about "fetus flyers", but would your opinion change if that 12 year was a beast at basing?
