Where's the full ups... Why is it that guys can do standing 2 to a double punch double but can't do unassisted full up libs or stretchs?!?!?!?

I dont coach a coed level 5 team, but I had a full up in high school. And I'm not that athletic....

Have you seen the guys in our industry right now? This is a TOTAL generalization and realize there are exceptions. But a lot of our Allstar guys are pretty skinny. Not saying skinny guys cant be strong - because stunting is mostly legs and technique, but most teams have guys smaller then the girls. The other thing is I think some coaches just dont know how to properly teach Coed as it hasnt been a huge thing in cheer recently. When I was in HS, I was pretty strong (wrestling, football, track, and baseball star) and I only had tossed hands extensions and tossed to hands libs that would fall all of the time! My coach was MORE than happy with that. My Coed 5 team this year has all four guys doing tossed to hands three body positions double PLUS a girl that can do it! One of the guys can do high to high tick tocks, full up immediate cupies, etc - But I know he is an abnormality!

@Cheer_Explosion_Coach IIRC it was discussed before on the boards in a couple of the threads that usually the guys that are the better stunters usually are not the better tumblers? And that this was another reason to minimize tumbling slightly so that teams could get guys to do the stunting required because to get better (an I believe in that thread the idea of bigger) guys stunting would mean that they would have to sacrifice the tumbling. or make the flyers tumble :)

sassady!!!!!!!

@FamousRudags and @tumbleyoda. Which is best for our industry? Bigger guys who can stunt but at max have level 4 tumbling or smaller guys with no coed stunting ability but standing fulls, trick through to doubles, hyper-extended jumps, and fierce dancers?

Can there be a place for both?

I own a gym about 15 minutes from LSU and even with the pretty incredible stunting ability of the LSU cheerleaders, it is tough getting guys in the gym. Football is a HUGE deal down here, as can be expected. If you watched the LSU/Oregon game last night, you'd see why. Most of the guys I work with don't mind cheering for their high school, but they leave all stars alone because of the image. In high school they don't have to jump or dance. I'd rather not make my guys dance or jump, but feel like they have to for us to be successful. I wouldn't have gotten involved in cheer if I had to jump / dance. I think we could get more boys interested if they didn't have to do those things. But is more boys better for our industry, if they aren't fully participating?

@Cheer_Explosion_Coach - there has to be a place for both, otherwise as these guys graduate we wont have the numbers to replace them. Another one of the reasons for the dying of the Large Coed Division.

This may be out of the box thinking but I almost feel like gyms are going to either have to form collaborative partnerships to share training tumbling in the future or you will see straight tumble gym/programs begin to develop and contract out their services to cheer gyms. This seems to be the only way that gym that cant afford to hire trained tumbling staff can get quality tumbling instruction. As a tumbling coach I cringe anytime tumbling is minimized either on score sheets or by the creation of less tumbling divisions (4.2) because it makes it less necessary for those who teach tumbling. I don't want less tumbling but more tumbling with safe progressions that does not penalize teams/programs for not chucking a skill just so they can get in majority ranges to stay competitive with the gym down the street.

When it comes to stunting, I guess gyms will have to recruit more guys but this will be limited to the gyms that can actually afford to carry them with scholarships.

Just curious. Are the girls doing these stunts normal sized flyers or are they itty bittys?

question.. my senior 3 has a "coed" stunting section but its based m=by all girls because the only boy on our team is 9.... does this mean we won't get the points on a jam brands score sheet since the boy isn't basing?

wish you all could have been in the room when my gym owner asked them....."so basically your telling me because my girls dont have something between their legs they aren't getting any credit for what they're doing?".....
lol.... (she will probably KILL ME for telling you guys this!)
Its fine Lee. You arent the only one talking about it. I got a call from one of the JemFest owners about it. I told him "sorry it just slipped". I guess sometimes you have to hold your tongue. Made me SOOO mad. However, varsity isnt giving any kind of credit at all for Coed stunting so actually my beef might be with Varsity and not JamBrands..
