I have a newly 9yo cheerleader who often complains of lower back pain after cheer practice. Was considering a chiropractor for her but have heard pros and cons and I'm not sure if it's the right thing. Have any of you done it and did it help? Thanks.

Yes. I complained of lower back pain too. The best way to describe it was like my back was compressed. Almost like I had jammed my spine. I started seeing a chiropractor who's office also does therapeutic massage and it has helped so much. It was great to have a pain-free practice. But not all chiropractors are created equal, make sure your's does X-rays. This is so important. I wouldn't let anyone touch your child if they didn't look at the bone issues first. Especially because your daughter could have an unknown condition aggrivated by cheer that chiropractor care couldn't fix, but could discover. It's nice to find one that also offers therapeutic massage. This especially helped me

Thanks I'm going to check it out. Her pain is usually after the coaches have made them do a ton of standing handsprings and it's almost every practice now. Does anyone know if chiropractors are covered by most insurance plans?

You might find some who are covered by insurance. They never used to be covered because they are alternative medicine.

I have the same compression pain in my lower back when I do bhs. I would definitely call the chiropractor office and see what kind of insurance they take. I have kaiser and all I had to do was call member services and they referred me to a chiropractor in my area that took my health insurance.

Go to a "real" Dr first please. Get x-rays and a MRI if necessary. At 9, and pain in her back just from back handsprings? I wouldn't trust a chiropractor for a correct diagnosis. From my experience, some chiropractors are about as qualified as I am to treat your child. I don't care what their "credentials" are.

Thanks I'm going to make some phone calls Monday. I know I can't afford it unless insurance covers it so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Do you still go to the chiropractor and has it helped a lot?

It did help a lot but since I havent stopped cheering it hasnt really gotten better.

All of my kids have been to a chiropractor since birth. I would recommend a pediatric chiropractor It's fairly easy to find one at the website http://icpa4kids.org/. If not, then there are many that specialize in sports injuries, etc. Good luck!

I'm going to do this too because I want to nip this thing in the bud. She has had full body xrays along with tons of other tests as a baby because of problems after birth which at first the doctors couldn't figure out so they checked everything so I know it's nothing like that but she could have injured something so I need that checked too.

depending on if she bases or flys might also be something to do with it, some bases tend to use their back to base instead of legs. if not, besides that i would agree with the part about the back handspring

Best idea ever! I know there are plenty of great chiropractors out there, but seems to me, there are plenty of money grabbing ones too who promise you that all you need is them, 3 times a week...forever! Going to a GOOD chiropractor does wonders, but only when you KNOW there are no real issues going on.

She does base but she never complains when they work on just stunting it's only when they run those standing handsprings which they don't do every day.

I take all 3 of my cheerleaders to a chiropractor for "regular maintenance", but for any specific injuries or pain, I ALWAYS start with an MD.

I have, however, used a chiropractor for treatment in conjunction with an MD, and in some cases have found it can help speed up the healing process. We use a chiropractor who specializes in athletes.

i had the same exact problem when i was 13 until i was 16. i went to a chiropractor and it did WONDERS! worked very well until i developed a stress fracture. i would definitely recommend it. my chiropractor was covered by insurance!
