So i envy Louisville and gymtyme...no doubt. But what if that same situation would happen down in Miami with Florida International university and Topgun All Stars. What the outcome would be like? Everyone benefits out of it....more athletes coming to TOPGUN and kids getting to school...everyone i hear that tries to come down to cheer has a problem staying somewhere...or trying to get into school...WHY WOULDNT YOU WANT TO COME to MIAMI for school! ITS MIAMI! HELLO ! i just want peoples opinion...I really want to see the univerosty grow and as well as topgun...getting a bigger gym because more kids are coming in...even though theres ALOT of people there now! But you get my drift! Become an all star cheerleader at TOPGUN and train to be one of the TOP collegiate squads in the nation. PRETTY BIG DEAL!

Miami is a pretty big place and far away from a lot. Yes, it's beautiful, but if you don't live in the area or get a full ride to a college, most people won't be willing to relocate. Just from Atlanta to Miami is about 11 hours driving and I'd hate to pay airfare for Thanksgiving, winter, and summer breaks. I'd want to see my family more than 3 times a year too so you have to add that in.

Louisville is more centralized, there are bigger cities closer to it along with lots of big, D1 names. The entire SEC seems pretty close together, too. If I lived in Alabama, I'd be more likely to move to Lexington than to Miami. And if you have Top Gun level 5/6 skills, wouldn't you want to go to a big name school like Louisville or Kentucky? I understand that's what you're hoping they accomplish, and I think it can be done and be amazing! But FI would have to get it's name out there. I'm not familiar with coaching at the college level but I'm sure it takes years and years to build up a name, and even at that, the top runners at UCA Nationals stay pretty consistant. This is just my thinking/opinions.

For that to first happen the cheer staff and athletic program at FIU would have to agree to work alongside Top Gun's All Star curriculum which was happening at one point in time but directions as of recent seem to be going in two very different directions.

I think what Drkilluzionz said has a ton to do with it, Louisville has James and Misty owning Gym Tyme and coaching Louisville so the two are easily overlapped.
Another thing that could keep people from moving to Miami to cheer for both of them would be the cost of living in Miami. Now I am not sure but if FIU doesn't give full scholarships then bringing in talent to pay for cheer there plus Top Gun could be hard. The cost of living in Louisville is cheaper then in Miami. While Miami is gorgeous you have to look at the bigger picture instead of just the nice beaches and sunny weather.

I think that Having A Well rounded college near a well rounded gym would either be a major success or major failure for both programs. There are several programs that benefit to this...
Lousiville/gymtyme, Oklahoma State/Twist and Shout, Navarro/cheer athletics/ spirit of texas

The thing about this though is that Most of the Boys/girls that cheer On allstar will be on international or senior age teams. I know that some gyms DO NOT FORM or refrain from forming these teams because their business loses profit from these teams. I know that most college students have to pay for Food/shelter/books/car/ and Many other things depending on what scholarship is given. so therefore lack money to pay tuition and or competition fees. It is also difficult to have this happen at specific places due to the whole "allstar and school cheer" thing. Where if you Cheer at A college they do not allow you to do allstar. Schedules could get pretty hectic to arrange and I know NCA Daytona is close to worlds so coaches dont like Letting there kids compete allstar. I know that certain colleges to benefit from having SEVERAL allstar athletes on it. They have experience and have competed doubles fulls since they were teens. One twist is easy to them. I give them credit for the hard floor though. :)

In the end there are many things that each can benefit and that each can lose...

Am I the only one that thinks that connecting a college with a university is a horrible idea. Either cheer for the college, or cheer all star. Too much cheer is a distraction from the main purpose for moving in the first place, to further your education. Do not get me wrong, I cheered for an allstar program while I was a sophomore and freshman in college, but I did not move to a specific college to cheer at a specific all star program. That idea just does not make sense to me in moving on and creating a career.

I can't agree with you more. I always tell my old kids to pick a school for your major first and then find a team in the area if you want to cheer. So many kids are choosing schools for the wrong reason and need some guidance. Granted I owned my own gym and cheer was a huge part of my life for 15 years, but its not all that is out there. If you move to a town just to cheer I don't feel like you will have the most fulfilling college experience. Just my two cents ;)

well I cheered at top gun, and I actually think it is a pretty cool idea! and could defiantly work... it doesn't matter who the kids are or whatever... coach Victor is the best and can make any person off the street an amazing cheerleader.. I really don't think there any many negatives to this! It could help with the school getting a lot more kids, and im sure Top gun would work something out. Some sort of way to help the kids that move down there like giving cheaper tuition to the gym if you are going to school and getting good grades! There are a lot of people in the world who want to cheer at top gun. and I think giving them the option to go to school could also help in many ways. In college you get a dorm and food passes and what not. When I moved there I got my own place so it was a lot more expensive for me then if you went to school! Idk just my opinion but i think that this is a very smart concept! :)

I disagree with making an athlete choose either or...effective time management is a life skill that everyone needs to learn...I feel that far to many a time good athletes with good grades and good time management skills are deprived of an experience or opportunity b/c of notions like this. If an athlete can handle school and cheering two teams than why not? I've always believed in take every opportunity you can get and run with it...am I saying every can do this? ABSOLUTELY NOT...but why discourage it for those who can?

I do not know many people that can handle a college and allstar team, let alone college itself in the first year of moving away from home. Many people decide to move to a specific college because of a cheer program rather than because of what the college has to offer, and that to me is wrong. I am not saying that FIU is not a good school, but I would like to know within the years TopGun has had people come to miami for cheer, how many of those athletes attended FIU or Miami-Dade with a full courseload.

I would think that the athletes at Louisville and OSU that do Gym Tyme and Twist and Shout while freshman in college would disagree with not being able to handle it. I am sure that some can't handle it, which is why you see some end up dropping college cheer or out of school, but it seems like there are an awfully lot of those athletes that graduate from college all while doing college and allstar.
I do agree though that when you go to college your education should be number one and the school you attend should be for your education not for cheer. I think it bothers me more that athletes go to specific colleges that give out large scholarships just to cheer and don't care much for the school itself. There are athletes that choose HPU simply because they gave out the scholarships and won rings, yet they failed to realize how far away it is and how hard it can be to transfer when they get homesick. A scholarship is nice, but when you don't like the school it IMO is a waste of a scholarship.

I would like to know the grades and level of courses being taken by those attending the colleges and whether or not the athletes are simply attending the college to appease or are trying to make something further of themselves.

Several are in the business school at Louisville which means they have to maintain at the minimum a 2.8 GPA. Those that I know who have gone to school there and cheered have had to work their butt off to make sure they made the grades to either remain in their major or to even make mat for Daytona.

UL/Gymtyme is a great partnership. The fact the coaches at Louisville own Gymtyme makes it work. Like Cory said it could absolutely work with FIU/Top Gun if they had a similar relationship and/or a better working partnership.

Most of the young men/women I know who have come down to Top Gun to cheer and go to school have had a life changing experience. Some have just come down for the experience and put off school. Top Gun is a special place and being located in Miami just adds to it. I would say 99.999% of them who have done it, will tell you it was one of the best experiences of their life. Some have returned home or gone elsewhere to either go to school and/or purse another opportunity. Some are still here finishing their schooling and/or pursuing their career. Their connection to Top Gun and the relationships they have made is still there. I can also tell you these athletes who have come here have enriched our lives as well....and I'm sure Cory and the staff would agree.
