I just found out this morning that I am getting the opportunity to host the local cheerleading competition for all of the Youth, Middle, and High School teams in our area next season. I know I need to get the basic things done like:

Setting a date
Finding a location
Getting mats
Judges
A Sound system
Awards

But what are some other things I am missing or could add to make this event great?

Yes, something to pass the time while the judges are compiling results. Jump contest, dance music, etc.

Oh please no! These just drag it out!

Get a group together to run a tabulation room. Have someone run scores from the judges table to the tabulation room after each team. The people in the tabulation room can add up the scores and come up with the placements and final scores. Then the judges just come in to the tabulation room and review them and sign off on the placements and scores. The tabulation room gets the score sheets together in envelopes for the coaches (give them to the coaches during/after awards). Then you can get out of there as soon as possible after the last team has competed.

Have a designated "pick up spot" for all teams that is in an out of the way area to avoid the crush of people trying to get their kid in the middle of the walk way on the side of the mat in front of the entrance

assign each school a team meeting room ahead of time so they can tell when and where to meet. It also cuts down on the number of people clogging the hallways!

get anything and everything you can donated- sell baskets - and bring the concessions into the stands- people dont want to leave their seats but if given an oppertunity to get a cold drink- they will buy-

True, true.

I have seen it both ways. We were at a comp last year that went on and on. They actually had a dance off for parents and one mom obviously had no business "getting low" and ended up blowing out her knee and being carried off the stage. I thought we would never get to leave - we were joking about filing kidnapping charges. On the other hand, we were at one this year where they are WAY understaffed and the event director and judges were scrambling around with papers and calculators and everyone just sat there in awkward silence for what seemed like ages.

If its feasible and you have enough staff/volunteers I think having a separate group tabulating is a great idea - this also prevents a lot of mistakes I am sure!

Gymnastic meets run like this and it's great!!!

I would have paid good money to see this.

It was a complete train wreck. Couldn't watch but couldn't look away. This was the same comp that the very longwinded and inappropriate announcer (who felt the need to comment after each and every team) announced after a team was finished competing "Great job girls! Huge improvement over last year!" We were completely floored.
