How often does it happen that an athlete doesn't make the same team they were on the previous year? For example a girl on panthers in 2011-2012 season doesn't make panthers for 2012-2013 season

These are my thoughts. I think it's relative to an athlete's skill and ability and also to how large and successful the gym they are at is. Cheer Athletics, for example, is a gym that is able to field not only a large quantity of Level 5 athletes but successful Level 5 teams as well. An athlete that is on Panthers one year could be moved to Cheetahs or FierceKatz the next. Athletes could be spread to see where they best fit in the organization or to just change teams up and make teams the best they can be. I think that if an athlete works well with a team one year and that team and athlete are successful the athlete has a possibility of remaining there, but that's just my opinion.

What about in smaller gyms? Only fielding one level 5 team how would a coach tell the athlete they wouldn't be on the team anymore?

I think the athlete's skills would have to be addressed there. Athlete's should not be on a team if they do not meet the minimal requirements. Granted, some athletes are more strong suited to one area of cheerleading, and there is nothing wrong with that, sometimes their strength works well with a team. Replacing an athlete that barely has a full on a level 5 team with one that has strong level 5 tumbling with good technique and experience goes back to the original athletes skill level, and how they would be of help to the team. Now if the gym has a limited number of level 5 athletes and an athlete is one of few with level 5 skills, the coach would probably be better suited to fielding a successful and more well rounded level 4 team or Restricted 5 to the benefit of the rest of the athletes and their program, IMO.

As for CA, athletes change teams all the time. I'm sure most of y'all know Chelsea, Wildcats center flyer, has been on Wildcats the past few years but before that was on Panthers (even before Wildcats went Int & not bc she aged out.) Hope was on Cheetahs last year & Panthers this year. This list goes on and on, those are just a couple of people I figured most would recognize. There have been girls that have gone from Fkatz to Panthers/Cheetahs/Wildcats and vice versa. Just bc you're on one team one year doesn't mean you'll be on the same team the next.

CA is one of those gyms where you could be happy to be on any team within the gym. Moving around the level 5 teams wouldn't be much of a change because they are all amazing. It seems that CA is one gym who likes to spread their talent out instead of stacking just one team.

Would this be any different than any other sport? New QB comes to the school with bigger arm and now your the back-up. That's why it's called "try-outs" not, oh we like you and you've been with us so you keep your spot. Kids change in size and skills every year. If the childs skills are being passed up, why should she stay on that team just because she was on that team the year before?
I'm speaking in general, in no way referencing CA.

I can give you lots of reasons:
1. Poor attitude
2. No skill advancement from previous season
3. The year before they did not have enough true level 5 kids to fill the team and now they do and they are not one of them.
4. The parents did not pay on time
5. Was late or missed too many practices.

The list could go on and on.

Well this happened to me, I was on our level 5 team one year, and I had broken my ankle so after worlds I had to sit out and I didn't have my tumbling anymore, so my coach came and talked to me and told me that he was putting me on level 4 for the upcoming season so I can get my skills back and the next year I was back on level 5

Exactly. You wouldn't hear anyone say, I got "moved down" from Panthers to Cheetahs. Or, "I got moved down to Panthers from Wildcats" etc etc. Where as at some other gyms, if you went from one level 5 team to a different level 5 team the next you may consider it getting "moved up or down"

It happened to my cp this year. She was on Pink after tryouts. Tore her rotator cuff and was out from September to NCA. Did not make pink on the 2nd tryouts in February. Rehabbed and became stronger and was put on black. End result was she helped black win gold. As she won her 5th worlds.

If you make it an issue it will become an issue. If your are positive and truly have the teams best interest in your heart it will pay off. After all it is about the TEAM not about the me.

I think the reason could be totally related to things other than skills on the mat. Work ethic, attitude, attendance, payment standing, discipline, etc. There's a bunch of things that CAN affect an athletes placement other than their skill set.

I completely agree and believe that's why CA came home with 3 gold medals & 2 bronze at worlds. (4 Gold, If you include dance athletics)

What about at gyms that have a more defined "premier/flagship" level 5 team (WC [Stars], Twisters [F5], Rays [Orange], etc.)? Do athletes often get moved from these teams to others within the program?

It seems that most people view moving to those teams as "moving up". Not sure what it is like within the gym, but for myself I would absolutely love to be able to do all my senior aged years on Reign, Smoke, or Ody.
