All-Star A New Name For Cheer

Some of those comments hurt. For example, "If there is no defense, it isn't a sport. Even golf has some element of defense." What? In my opinion, cheerleading is ALL defense. We may not be in a "contact sport" like football, be we DEFINATELY do compete to DEFEND our school, our name, our gym, our coach, titles that we may hold, everything! We "defend" our team against others. Sounds like defense to me..
And "Why the sexy short skirts?" comment.. Yes, we do wear skirts that are short. But half of the all star teams now wear spanks as bottoms instead of skirts, and could anyone even imagine trying to compete in knee-length skirts? Those would not work very well at all, especially for the tumbling and jumps that we do now.
Speaking of tumbling, there was a comment made that "Everything involved in cheerleading is already subsumed under dance and gymnastics. The last thing we need during this era of recession and financial struggle is another meaningless sport." Well excuse me. I wasn't aware that dancers and gymnasts tossed people in basket tosses or held people above their heads while the people in the air do heelstretches, arabesques, scorps, needles, chins, or anything! Do not get me wrong, as a cheerleader, I DO learn by watching dancers and gymnysts and I absolutely LOVE watching their competitions, but there are a lot of things that separate cheer, dance, and gymnastics. Then this person went on to say that the last thing we need in this era of recession and financial struggle is another meaningless sport. That got me. To hear my sport, my life, called meaningless is just plain rude. Honestly, if ever anyone said that to my face, I don't know if I could control myself. We don't call other sports meaningless, so why should they say that about us??

Do you think that the perception of competitive cheerleading in the eyes of the general uneducated public will change if competitive cheerleading was named something else?
I do think that people would look at competitive cheerleading differently if it was called something else, such as STUNT. Just the fact that the word "cheerleading" has so many controversial topics and stereotypes behind it clouds people opinions, I believe.
Do you think it is even possible to change the name?
I do think that it is possible to change the name, but I think that it would take awhile.. I personally could never see cheerleading called any other name, but I think that a changed name would eventually catch on.

Is it worth it to try and change the name to become a legitimate sport?
Honestly, no. Like it was mentioned before, the NCAA would put on so many rules and requirements that it would be ridiculous.. Not saying that it would be a bad thing, but it could turn out to be bad. Honestly, we should probably just deal with cheer not being a sport..

(Sorry for the rant above, it just made me really mad..!!)
(And my editing time ran out, so I had to reply to myself:p)

Okay I love the idea of cheerleading actually being considered a "sport" as much anyone else, but what they are proposing is not the sport that we love to do. Its to gymnastics-y. And quarters and tournaments? We have 2 minutes and 30 seconds to prove ourselves... which is the way it should stay. They also said the stuff we do would be preset, which is ridiculous. That takes the creativity out of all of this. That would take the enjoyment out of watching my favorite teams, because they would all be doing the same thing. And those uniforms in the video- they look like volley ball player uniforms. Ridiculous. As much as I want cheer to be considered a sport, what they talked about in that article, was not my sport.

NCATA all the way! Respectfully judged, athletes treated as athletes by the University. Correct progression and scoring I feel is what truly separates STUNT from NCATA.

I, for one, don't really care if it becomes a sport or not. I don't need an official ruling to tell me that what I do is hard. I am just tired of people being uneducated about, and unwilling to be educated about it because they think all we do is through are hands up in the air and say go team. It gets annoying when you tell people what you do and they dont even listen for an explanation they just tune you out because "oh I am a ________ player, I do a real sport.

I feel that we need some sort of "sport" title for many reasons.
- For collegiate scholarships
- Respect and sponsorships
- Legitimate data tracking (both scoring and injuries)
- A future
I also feel that is has to be done RIGHT! If "we" jump the gun we could find ourselves in a "be careful what you wish for" scenario.
The sport of CHEER (or whatever you want to call it) is a UNIQUE activity, requiring exceptions to the "typical" rule of sport. We require different training, we require different scoring, we require a different SEASON (which I feel is where one of the main issues falls).
I do commend that STUNT and NCATA are pushing and working hard to legitimize "Cheer". My ONLY issue between the two is that I feel STUNT is leaving the door open for scoring issues. To my knowledge as of now it's a "I like what they did, they win this round and get a point".
I respect that NCATA has set code of points, a set requirement of skills. Love or hate the compulsory elements all you want. I personally LOVE IT! I'd love to see squads PERFECT the basics before attempting the harder skills. JMO

I wish there were more documentaries picked up by big networks. I still watch On The Inside on YouTube and would like an updated special since things are not what they used to be. That's what people need to see, not another Dance Moms rip off. I shared the clip of the SS girl who got her teeth knocked out and finished the routine with blood running down her chin and that definitely changed a lot of opinions.
Daytona Dreams was really good!

From what I have heard people say, it's not so much the name. It is that they don't think we go "head to head" with another team. As in what another team does doesn't change our score at all.

After watching the Penn & Teller show on Cheerleading, I realized that it probably won't ever be ruled an official sport and how Varsity and "All Star Cheer/Competitive Cheer" probably pay a part in that. You can find their 2 part show on YouTube. It addresses a lot of reasoning on why cheer probably won't ever be categorized as a sport.

i would really like to see it considered a sport but the likelihood of that is slim.
unfortunate but true

The name of that show is Bull**** and that's exactly what it is. We did a unit on fallacy and deception in documentaries, and I did a whole report on this episode. A lot of it is completely incorrect. At one point they state that Varsity owns an Allstar gym....

Varsity owns several All-Star gyms. They are called Premier.

Sorry, forgot about those. But I'm not sure that was the program in question (it's been awhile) and that's an incredibly small percentage of gyms. There were other things that came to mind. While some of their points were valid, some were well, BS.

I watched it and a lot of things seemed very exaggerated or twisted, but not necessarily wrong.
