Was her mom overweight? I knew one of them was but I can't remember which. Not sure if I'm the only one, but has anyone ever noticed how almost all the moms on Toddlers & Tiaras are overweight?
Yes she was.

It also bothered me that the team placement was based solely on that one tryout. If a kid has been there for at least one season, the coaches should know enough about their work ethic to realize that if they dont work hard or try during the season and then magically throw tumbling at tryouts, they are not to be trusted to continue actually trying. The way I see it, a cheerleader is trying out the whole season. Not on just one day.
Bingo. That's why I think Evaluations for existing kids at our gym are just sortof routine. They KNOW our kids. They know what they can do regardless of whether they stress themselves out at evaluations and balk or if they suddenly throw a skill the coaches know they don't "really" have yet. For our existing athletes they know what team you'll be on without a "tryout."

I was just informed that CTR''s level 6 team is "awesome" by a private message from someone claiming to be a CTR mom....... As we say down south, BLESS HER HEART. I really can't blame these CTR people. I think they actually think they are the greatest thing since sliced bread.. :(
Hahaha. Any southerner knows what "bless their heart" means :)

Well why wouldn't they think that? They don't go to the larger comps and do well at the comps they go too, so of course they are going to believe that. One thing I will say is that Alisha is clearly a business women, that gym looked busy and she also has the pageant side as well. She knows what she is doing in that area or the kids would go elsewhere. Maybe they are the best option for where they live or for what 'those kinda parents' want. It take a special coach to put up with that level of crazy! If they have 4 crazy parents to base this show off of I bet they have more!

For the same reason we thought that the first gym we were a part of (and the conversation in my current program was...OMG it's just like the gym we came from!!! (enter scary "the shining" music here)

I had no idea cheersport nationals existed and were a quick 4 hour drive. Never heard of NCA or UCA. I knew there was a thing called "worlds" but never saw a video and had no idea when it was held. I had never even seen a video of Cali, top gun, cheer athletics because not only did I not know they existed, I'd never even heard their names. Spirit of hope is right here in Charlotte and we didn't know that local, national, 2-day competition existed. The biggest thing we ever went to was jamfest nationals in either gatlinburg or Richmond. We did us finals one year and got killed...we were absolutely destroyed by the pythons, cheer savannah and c4 longhorns at jamfest in our last year. But our coach claimed our placements at those big competitions were all political and since we had zero understanding of the industry we believed her.

When we came to aviator....wow. What an education did we get? we'd always finished last in the cheersport regionals and I always HATED cheersport because we'd do well at all the other backyard competitions we went to I bought the "cheersport doesn't like us" excuse.

Cheersport is about CLEAN and DEDUCTIONS. NOW that aviator introduced me to what competitive cheer actually is....it makes perfect sense and nationals are my absolute favorite competition. I found an old DVD of my daughters mini 1 her first year and popped it in just a few weeks ago. We watched with our jaws on the floor. Omg is was the poster routine for the craptastic Allstars. The choreography was terrible and the execution was embarrassing...and that routine won jamfest in Richmond over 9 teams....I shudder to think what they looked like. How I ever thought that was amazing, I'll never know.

So I can totally see how they think they're the elite in the industry. We were in a very similar place and were just completely uneducated. I saw sooooo much of the same thing it was like a flashback to our first three years....even their "cheer" is similar in style and language.

I think that's the same at a lot of gyms. The general rule I've heard at ours is that 80-90% of the team is decided before tryouts start. There might be a couple of spots where the tryout might make a difference, like if you're trying to pick between a couple of different kids for the last open flyer position. But that's the exception.

That mom isn't far off the mark. (I'm a last minute alternate, doing it as a favor for my old coach who is on the team). Now everyone should know the odds of a college based squad hitting a perfect routine after 8 weeks of practice, with all the drama that goes along with open squads (ask kingston about how hard it is to get open teams ready) but there are some good athletes, including a former panther from their small senior year, coaches from 3 other gyms, and a couple of sick tumblers, and some UCA cheerleaders.

However (in my continuing policy of being an observer in this situation since I have real life friends involved) don't take this as an endorsement of the gym/coaching styles/whether Alicia should wear pigtails :) etc. I don't 100% agree with either the haters or the gym (and I doubt anyway truly is as we should realize it's tv and i know a LOT of this drama was scripted) but I do think it's a little short sided to criticize a team you've never seen. However if we fall apart this weekend, feel free to flame away.

I just explained my stance with one of the parents from there as well. My issue is not that I am a hater, by any means. My issue is quite the opposite. I feel discouraged that by the silly portrayal of what is a very new sport is going to discourage growth. Any parent that might be on the fence about letting their daughter do allstars, is likely to be turned off by the antics and momma drama of this show. I understand after talking to the mom I spoke with that a lot of this show is staged and scripted for entertainment value. But I feel like no one took into consideration that this show was really not in the best interest for the growth of the sport. I feel like all gym owners should be protective for the growth of the industry, and I'm sad that this owner did not have the sports best interest in mind. I would love to see an accurate portrayal of the hard work and sacrifices athletes make. Not some silly dance mom-ish show. As far as your team goes, I wish y'all the very best this weekend. I would love to see you guys get a bid and go very far with that...

I think I figured out why this really bothers me...The name of this show is "Cheer Perfection" not "Cheer Moms" or "Cheer kids & Pom Pom's". It's name implies a serious show about competitive cheer. Go and view Patty Ann form CJA in this cheer show. This is a show that promotes the passion and dedication that was the reason we all fell in love with cheer to begin with! Is it perfect? No but it is something that would make me proud to say I am a competitive cheerleader.
episode 1

episode 2

This is a show that shows a coach with passion. She yells at her kids and not ONCE did I think she was being disrespectful or uncaring. I am willing to bet she is just as passionate about her lower levels too. If we want to be taken seriously as a sport this the image we want to project. One that shows kids and coaches with passion. A show that clearly states how hard these children work and what great athletes they really are.
If they want to market "Cheer Perfection" as a fluffy narrow view of Cheer Time Revolution of Arkansas maybe I can accept that. Call it "Tiny Cheer and Pom Pom's" or "Crazy Cheer Mom's from Arkansas" or any other name that infers it is a kitschy contrived reality show. NOT "Cheer Perfection" because there is nothing perfect about that show.

OOPS!!!! I tried to attach the two episodes of Central Jersey Cheer. Could some one just post them to this thread so my long winded rant makes sense? LOL

All true, but as far as the show goes once again I'm out of that fight. I just try and keep out lol, and thx but it's just a one time comp, and I'm on a full year 5. And I will say while i don't believe the show is necessarily good for the sport, the one thing I won't fault anyone for is making an honest business decision. I'm sure that if the show makes it to air that will mean money.

I just found out 2 horrifying things. 1) CTR has a level 6 team.. No words to explain how scary that is. 2) Alisha just posted on Facebook that cheer perfection had 1.1 million views for the first episode. I think that's enough to secure her time spot. :/
NOOOOO! 1.1 million viewers? :banghead:
