To err is to be human. To arr is to be pirate.[/quote]

sorry being a ECU Pirate Fan it's arrggggg! LOL!

Here's another annoying trend:
Everyone getting a prize for just showing up. I mean...I don't get a chocolate chip cookie every day for getting out of bed. It used to be that in any competitive event, there was 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place...they got awards (trophies, ribbons, whatever...) and everyone else went home to work harder. I don't know when we started rewarding mediocrity and making everyone feel that they're entitled to something that they didn't really have to work for. Just sayin'....

I was attempting to keep it to the same letter amount. And I felt 'Arg' is more a sound of frustration than a sound a pirate makes lol
I know what you were getting to... I tried to stop myself from the pirate coming out of me but it just came out! LOL! But your message was great!

I completely agree, but I think people wanted some sort of justification for paying what they do just to compete, even if it is just a 5 dollar tshirt.

Yeah...that's a souvenir, though. I'm talking about stuff like medals and trophies for participation, stuff that can be considered an actual award.

I digress slightly, but I think this has become a problem across so many spectrums of life, not just in cheer. The clearest example is in our schooling system. Nowdays people feel like every child should get an award, every child needs to feel "special" and like they are "winning", so now instead of the person topping the subject getting an award, for example, everyone is getting awards just for "trying hard". It completely devalues the person who is actually winning/achieving IMO. I don't think there is anything wrong with having only the winners receive awards, and I don't think that this damages children's self-esteem (like so many people think). On the contrary, it actually teaches them important life lessons. The world is not all sunshine and rainbows, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose (even though you may have tried your hardest), and learning how to deal with that is an extremely important skill.

DON'T get me started on education systems..I will LOSE it. There are so many things that would be fixed but you can't because of stupid red tape and unions and other stuff..

This irritates me when we are in awards and the teams that exhibition get an award. Makes me think the fees I paid to actually compete are spent on rewarding non competing teams.
Of course, this doesn't apply to special needs teams. :)

I couldn't agree more!! My youngest is 7 and he has friends that play baseball & soccer in leagues where they don't keep score... Are you kidding me? In life, some win & some loose. That's Real world! When Jax's football team looses, he gets mad and it makes him want to play better and it makes him competitive which will make him more equipped for life! I think we could probably go on for days about this! Not everyone wins, not everyone gets the job and not everyone is successful! Life is full of disappointments and we need to teach our kids how to pick themselves up, wipe the tears and go out in the world and kick some butt!! ;)
