I would bet that the cost of putting work into the car would cost a lot less than buying a new one. Plus, if you get regular maintenance you can drive a Toyota forever.

Very true. I have an '01 Camry and it's going strong, even after miles and miles of use. I just change the oil regularly and get it tuned up at the end of the school year. Drive the junker for a bit, you're just getting your license, you're not supposed to have a super awesome car!
Hope you did well on the drive test. I remember when I got mine, I was ecstatic!!! Being able to drive yourself is the best thing ever.

Just wondering. What you have to do to get a driving licence in USA?
It totally varies by state.
In California, if you're under 18, you have to get drivers education for a certain number of hours. Basically you have school where you watch instructional videos, learn the rules of the road, etc. Then, if you're 15 1/2 years old, you can take your permit test. Once you have your permit, you can drive with a licensed adult over the age of 25. When you have your permit, you have to take 5 hours of drivers training where you're with a driving instructor and basically drive around. Then after you've held your permit for 6 months, driven with the driving instructor, have driven more than 50 hours, and are 16 years old, then you can take your driving test where you drive with someone from the DMV evaluating you. If you pass, you finally get your license! BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE.
Once you get your license, you are super restricted on what you can or cannot do. Within the first 12 months (or until you turn 18), you cannot drive with anyone under 20 years old unless accompanied by a licensed parent/guardian/someone over 25 y/o and you cannot drive between the hours of 11PM and 5AM without a licensed parent/guardian/someone over 25 y/o.
If you're over 18, I think you can automatically go take the driving test and once you get your license, there are no restrictions.

So weird, we don't have that! In WI, you can drive with anybody but you can only have one other passenger (who isn't family) with you for 9 months.

yeah, it's completely different in NC.
Once you're 14.5 you can take drivers ed. Then you can get your permit at 15. You have that for 1 year, with like 20 hours of driving (that you must record) in different conditions such as rain, snow, or even just at night. You have to have an adult/parent/or guardian in the car with you, and I think you can only have one other passenger.
After that year, once you're 16 you can get a limited provisional license. You have this for 6 months. Before this time is up, you can only drive 6am-9pm with one non-family member passenger. If it's siblings, they take it differently and its ok to have 5 siblings in the car. After 6 months, you get after 9's and can drive with more passengers, at all hours.

in tennessee you can get your permit by a written/ computerized test when you turn 15. if you're 15 and a half or older, you have to have your permit for 6 months (180 days) before you can take your driving test to get your licence. The driving test is literally driving around the block, although i did fail the first time because i ran a red light. (it was yellow. i swear)

Yes I passed! I was nervous but the instructor took alot of time explaining the test and even had me do a few practice runs through the driving course. Agree with the Toyota life...and the 99 that my sister is giving me just needs some tires, breaks and a good cleaning really, 110,000 miles is nothing. My mom has an 01 0r 02 Camry, with almost 160,000 on it! It runs pretty good still, although this morning and after school I had a hard time starting it up! I think cause it was a little cold out so no big deal. Has that ever happened with yours?? I'm so used to the old 99 cam turning on after one or 2 tries. Maybe i'll have my bf look at it, its just my sister me and my mom, we are no mechanics! But anyway I can't wait to get a personalized license plate. I've always wanted one:)

Yay!!! Congrats!
Yeah, when it's cold it will take a time or two to turn over. I know mine has over 100,000 miles on it and it's still running pretty good. And it never hurts to have the boyfriend look at it! Mine used to repair cars so I got lucky... :D

In Slovenia we have to take a class what to do if there is an car accident and people are hurt ( Don't know how to say it in english ) than we have to take test about rules on the road. And then we have to drive with an instructor at least 20 hours of driving ( and one hour costs 30 dollars!!! ) And then you have to take a driving test. I failed twice! (omg) and on third time I got my licence. Almost everyone fail on the first time. And to get driving licence is sooo expensive. You have to pay at least 1000 €uros which is like 1200 dollars.

Oh no your car broke down outside of school before your d-test?? Well at least you passed. CONGRATS! driving yourself around and having the freedom is so good isn't it.

I have a '91 Toyota Corolla that is still going strong with only 48,000 miles. Do I win? :p Our '99 Toyota Corolla is running strong at about 140,000 miles (though the drive train broke and we got stuck in a parking lot, but besides that..). Much cheaper to fix than our awful '00 Volkswagen New Beetle. Never again will we buy a German car, lol.

But congrats on passing! When I took my driving test, I was freaking out about having to essentially parallel park (they have a parking space set up with cones that you have to back into like you would when you parallel park, backing in from the left side). I really though one of those cones was going to cause me to fail my test. Besides that, all I did was drive around a neighborhood.. literally. My driving test took about 5 minutes if that, lol. Could have been that short that because I was 18 since I didn't want to put out the money for driving classes.

Thats awsome! I'd love to have an older car with low miles, no payments! Just gotta keep maintaining it.

Kelly, It didn't break down, just took 5 or 6 tries to start the engine. Normally it only takes 1 or 2 key turns to start up. My BF said it needs new spark plugs, plus it was almost out of gas LOL and quite chilly outside. Just glad it wasn't a dead battery!

What kind of car do you drive?
