Kris thanks for asking this as I have had the same question for my CP.

Can I throw in a variation to the original question? Are privates worth while for flyers? My CP is not a flyer on the team but wants to learn how to fly. Her instructor is big enough and strong enough to put her up by himself, but my CP is less sure of herself with just him and she thinks to learn/practice more complicated stunt positions - you need a full stunt group. Thoughts?

Sorry this is a vent about stunt group privates - at our old gym, there used to be a stunt group on my cp's team that was going in for privates right before tryouts. It really irked me that the gym allowed this - and that they allowed the kids to make their own stunt groups for tryouts - because I felt so many assumptions were being made by these parents and their cps, as well as that the owner who was giving the privates was just using their insecurities to further line her own pockets.
While I think that privates in general should be used to advance new skills or perfect developing ones, I have issues when coaches do not address skill development in the off season or early in the season and rather expect the only way to advance is for the cheerleader to take privates with them. At least have the opportunity to learn the skills in a tumbling or flying or strength and flex type class.
Okay, rant over. And I will say that my cp currently goes to a tumbling class once a week and usually does a private every week as well.

Yes for flyers! About three of my private lessons are flyers. While their privates are originally for tumbling, sometimes we'll do flying drills and I'll stunt with them. I am a female, and most of these girls are too big for me to do legitimate one mans, but I'll lay down on a large mat and hold them up over my head instead. It's a good way to practice basic flying skills for levels 1-3, especially to practice different body positions.

For stunt group privates, they're worth it if it is mostly with her original group. I would first make her do a private with 2 coaches. If those coaches are strong and good at stunting, that's all you need to learn a lot of stunts as a flyer. Once she is good at the specific stunt with those coaches, then consider doing a private with her whole stunt group.

Too many privates can be bad. My daughter overdid it between practice and privates and open gyms and ended up with lots of injuries.

While doing too much can definitely lead to injuries, it mostly depends on what those coaches are making her do. Are they doing preventative conditioning? At my gym, all the coaches do a lot of conditioning. No, it is not just to get girls in shape. The drills and exercises I have my tumblers do are for two reasons: injury prevention and strength building.I create a detailed plan for my private lessons. out of the thirty minutes, my tumblers spend 10 minutes doing conditioning for those 2 reasons.

She was going through a growth spurt and overuse of her wrists ended up being broken wrists. too much tumbling.....

thanks for the feedback. She is not currently flying (first year of cheer on a level 3). She wants to learn enough to potentially be considered for the role next year - so her only flying experience would be during these privates. I will pass along the feedback.

Some kids just perform better 1:1. My CP is content as long as she's not the worst performer in a class. In a private class she has no one to compare herself to and tends to work harder.

I think it depends on the child. Some kids can't focus if there's a lot going on, especially the little ones. I know multiple kids I do privates with do 150% better when it's one on one learning.

Question if they master something like a full up or a tick tock in a private with a coach does that transfer well over to their team stunt groups?
