We stayed at the Magnolia last year. The elevators are scary because it's an old building that's been renovated into a hotel, but they have a good breakfast and even let me stay parked there even after I checked out without charging for another day of parking. They also have a driver that will take you to dinner, etc. I think I had to book it through NCA housing as an individual (rather than team) because all the rooms within walking distance were either already booked or part of the NCA housing blocks. The price wasn't bad and was comparable to lower quality places farther away.

The wait for the elevators was horrible. So bad that the hotel actually gave me credit for one night. If you stay there request a lower floor so you can take the stairs.

Yeah, I heard everyone complaining about the wait. The trick is when you're waiting to go down in the morning, take the elevator up. The mostly empty up elevator will stop, you get on, ride it up to where it's going and then by the time it fills up on the way back down you're already on board. Other than peak times (breakfast, check out) I didn't really have any wait.

I stayed at Aloft hotel..
It super modern and nice and close to the convention center. I believe it's a Hyatt brand

Aloft is part of the Starwood Hotels along with Sheraton, Four Points, Westin...if that helps any.

We stayed at the Element by the airport. Super cheap and very nice. Then just drove in each day and parked. Worked out fine.

Bumping this because I'm seriously considering going with another fierceboarder.
Neither of us can rent a car, so I need a hotel thats either within reasonable walking distance (especially at night), or has transportation, etc.

How expensive are cabs, typically?

We took a cab a few years back to the Hilton Anatole and it was $12-15 I think one way, and it's about 5 miles from the convention center. Hotels close to the venue tend to be pricy but give it a shot....if you can find a room. Many of the nearby hotels are tied up with Connections housing. We have stayed at the Hilton and Omni in the past, but I am not sure on the cheaper hotels. There is an area not far from the convention center (just south I believe) you want to stay away from.

Thank you! I've been searching around, and a lot of the open hotels are 1-2 hours away by public transit. Its cheap, but blah, I don't want to do that. I think a few extra work days will be worth it for a nice hotel and not worrying about the commute. Also, since I will either be alone or with one other person, I think it will be worth it to be in a good area, just to be a little safer.

I think you will have better luck finding hotels once the room blocks are lifted, which may be only a couple of weeks prior to the competition. I would book something now just to have and cancel it when something better comes along (make sure you get the 100% refundable rate!!). I have stayed at the Springhill Suites downtown in prior years. It was about a 15 minute walk, was in a good area, and was clean, comfortable and very affordable. You would not need to get a cab, and if the weather was awful you could take the train (never needed it because we had a car but I heard it was easy, safe and cheap).

That's where I'm staying this year! ;)
