High School Captain Issues. . .

As the coach, I think you should warn her that she needs to step up her performance and lead or you will find someone more fit for the job. You want to start off with a warning, because she may not even notice that she's slacking off.

Over time, I have realized that having only one captain is the best. That may be something to keep in mind for next year.

Captains creates issues. I told the girls when I took over the team that I am coach, I am boss. I appreciate and respect leadership from any members on the team, but at no point should they be taking orders from anyone but me. Granted, I have a small team so if there was more like 16-20 there may need to be a captain to run things through before they came to me.

I coached a girl that did nothing as a captain also. Send her a wake up call, tell her to get it together or else she may not be captain for much longer. Do it in private like someone else suggested, girls tend to cry a lot over nothing (know this from experience :p) and sometimes there's actual issues going on. Hopefully she'll start putting in a little more effort, but from my experience if you're just not a leader you can only pull it off for so long.
Do you think she deserves to go off to college and put on applications that she was the captain of a team? If I had had the power when I coached the girl similar to your description I would have taken it away.

As a staff, we are having the SAME issue. On our JV team, we have 2 captains. Early in the season, we were not sure about the one girls, but she was a junior on JV, she put in her time, etc. Pretty much she was great for the first month, but all she cares about is varsity football. Part of us wants to dethrone her, part of us wants to just kick her off. She is nothing but issues. As the head coach, I will be sitting with her and my JV coach and discussing the situation. She has a rude awakening next year, I am not taking her on varsity. Her attitude has been awful and that is part of the reason I am not going to.

She hated JV at first and then started to own the role.. then of course it went downhill. She never wears the right outfit, flat out does not follow directions, etc. The catch, last weekend the JV squad placed 2nd at their competition. They were clean and they did a great job. Varsity did not, they were in a pretty tough division, however, they did well! She has been running around school bad-mouthing Varsity now and how they didn't do well at all. I am even friends w/ one of her teachers in my personal life and she is telling me. She also said being the manager of the wrestling team is her first priority and she does not want to compete next year, only cheer football.. SOOOO with that being said... what she doesn't know is we are doing away w/ game only. It is so hard to get competition stuff done and with thinking about going to UCA Nationals, it's too crazy. So she is SOL :) HE HE

As a staff we are not taking away her title, however, it will be a very very very slim shot she will make a team next year.
