Interesting, thanks guys! It seems like a lot of us are different, but you all compete. I wish my school competed, it makes our teams look like a joke. We really do have some talented girls too. Another thing I forgot to add that she mentioned above^ How do you guys pick captains? We vote, but lately it's been more of a popularity contest. If we had our coach pick, people would say she's showing favoritism, because trust me it's happened already this season. It seems like theres no way to do and have everyone be happy.

I go to a public school, and our skirts are longer than usual. It may just be because Freshman's uniforms are 6 years old.. they get passed down. JV's are about the same length but Varsitys are pretty short. The Christian highschools in my area seem to have the same length skirts, or even shorter but I did go to a Football game where we played against a Christian school and the skirts were noticeably longer. One of my friends who doesn't cheer noticed and was comparing them to ours. Not quite knee length, but close!

We voted for captains, usually two. They are always seniors except this year there is a junior and a senior because there is only one senior on the team.

Do any of you still have tryouts in front of the student body?

Our cheer sponsor wants to do away with this. I didn't realize that most schools didn't do this anymore.

For captains we have the team vote. Jv votes for 2 people on JV and 2 people on Varsity and Varsity picks just 2 people for Varsity. We write them down on a slip of paper about 2 months into the season (right before cheer camp) and then the coaches count it up and tell us by the end of that same practice!
As for trying out in front of the student body, no we do not do that.

So at my school, freshman on varsity was banned for three years and just ended this year which just so happened to be my freshman year and me and one other girl are freshmen on it. We have all 3 levels, but JV and freshman are often together. This is the first year we didn't compete, but I think we will next year. We wear our uniforms or warmups or jerseys to school most game days. I think we have like 3 gymnasts, maybe half pop warner, 8 allstars, and the rest are just tumbling or new to cheerleading (probably 20 or so)

The candidates for captain are determined by a written essay, tryout scores and a panel interview in front of 3 judges, plus input from the coaches and administration.

i like that idea a lot better than what my school does. I would reccomend it for next year but i don't even know if im doing highschool cheer next year yet.. I might go back to allstar:oops:

My school has a three day try out. Two days for materials, stunting, tumbling and mile. They only thing that is taken in to your score during the two days is stunting. Then on the third day, we are put in groups to do what we learned, so a cheer and dance with any jumps, but at at least a double toe for Varsity comp. We can also tumble during this time. We get tryout results after this. We have three teams but our freshman team is fielded when school starts, so the freshman that come out to the Summer tryout make up our JV along with sophomores. But Varsity is open to whoever.

Varsity is the only team that competes at the District comp, however we've made attempts at getting our JV to do the exhibitions that are usually held as 'practices' for the Varsity's. You need to place top 4 at districts to go to regionals, and then states. After that comp season is over.

At my school, Freshman usually wear their uniforms to school, as a carry over from middle school. Because JV has so many freshman, they do it for the first few football games until noticing that Varsity doesn't do it. Varsity does spirit days for football, and because our basketball season is so long and we have two games, at least, a week, we do what we want for basketball season, unless we as a group decided to do something.

We do have a basketball tryout, because we lose 5 members at least from Varsity to other sports, or interests and JV and Freshman are usually empty because of girls that aren't ready for high school cheerleading. Basketball season is just learning cheers, that are a little harder because they involve steps.

I'm the only one out of all three squads who has ever had training in gymnastics or allstar cheerleading. The other girls think they own the place when ever they do a back bend or double toe-touch....

My high school has a JV(freshman and sophomores) and coed varsity(fresh-seniors) to make varsity you have to have a standing tuck, JV its encouraged to have a back handspring but not required, guys have to have a tuck or be able to toss a girl to hands

We do still have tryouts in front of parents/friends or whoever wants to come, but its used as a fundraiser and its a 2$ admission

Out of 26 on varsity 2 were gymnasts, 2-3 allstars the rest are pop warner/junior high that had good tumbling

Varsity and JV compete but JV does locals and Varsity goes to regionals, state, UCA nationals and any other fun comps we decided to do

The number of captains depends on how many seniors there are and we vote

At my school, We have two levels JV and Varsity. A standing back handspring is required to make Varsity and freshman can be on Varsity. We go to an annual competition for schools in our league (for lack of a better word" No high school squads in my area stunt,(northeastern ohio) we're not allowed to and it sucks. If you're on JV and you work really hard and if the coaches think you deserve it you can be moved to Varsity at any time in the season the reverse is true as well, if your on Varsity and your not meeting the expectations you can get demoted to JV. Normally we decide at practice what we want to wear on game days, whether it be warm ups, uniforms, matching t-shirts whatever. And sometimes we have former all star girls or gymnasts because of the gymnastics/cheer facility close to us

For my school there are no captains. You can pretty much only make varisty if you have a full or strong layout. They are adding a freshman team to the program. And our teams do compete. Our Varisty won at Nationals in Florida in the non-building division, although their stunting is above par.
Freshman are allowed on Varisty if their tumbling is where it needs to be. We don't wear our uniforms to school, only warm ups and what not.

Why do they compete non building if they're good stunters? Just curious :) I don't really know how UCA works haha we go to NCA
