Why is rivalry allowed by the coaches, surely it is damaging to the sport.

regardless whether we want it to be stopped or not. its always going to be there!

but a coach who can prevent it and not be bothered by it is & teach their kids to not be affected/say anything to or other gyms with negativity its what makes a Great coach and just your average coach different.

I NEVER allow my teams to discuss other teams or gyms. we never even talk about who we are against when we go to comps. I always want them to respect all other gyms.
I just tell them do your talking on the mat!

In any competitive sport there are going to be rival teams. Rivalry can give the team the motivation and drive to do better. Yes, there is unhealthy rivalry just like there is healthy rivalry. Rivalry exists everywhere from between siblings, school grades, to sport, to the work environment. Teaching children the healthy way to deal with rivalry is the way to go. You cannot avoid rivalry in life. Rivalry is different from the unnecessary drama that goes on in life as well.

In regards to rivalry between local gyms, I believe that is because of the business aspect of wanting the business to grow. Where we live there are at least 6 gyms within an hour drive of each other. Each gym has its own reputation for something, whether it is positive or negative and I am sure people who are members of that gym would dispute the negative reputation. I am happy that our owner/coaches have a healthy relationship with other gym owner/coaches in the local area. Our coaches are married/engaged/friends with coaches at other local gyms and/or are on teams at the other gym. This makes for a healthy environment especially since many girls/parents at our gym are good friends with girls at other gyms. It is not uncommon for the girls of other local gyms to take private lessons with the coaches at another gym. Many of them come to our gym for privates as well. Would we still want to beat them in a competition if we were in the same division… yes. Do we still cheer them on... yes. It’s all about good sportsmanship.

There are things that are just part of life. Cain and Able relationships exist everywhere.

i think rivalries can be in a little ridiculous, but i think it either pushes teams harder to do well, or ruins everything. as far as the rivalries i know of in the past i would say,
F5/World Cup/Senior Elite
Lady Bullets/Orange
as far as all the new gyms switching divisions i would say that the large girl rivalry is even bigger i mean SE/F5/Panthers/WC/Peach, yeah its gonna be a blood bath come worlds.

i dont really know of any huge rivalries in large coed, maybe Top gun and Cheer athletics

either way it makes the competitons more fun to watch on who can handle the pressure and who cant.

Well since this thread has been brought back...
My gyms rivalry is really a bunch of kids talking bad about each others team. Sad thing is, most of our athletes go to the same schools and cheered together at some point in time.
But hey, being 30 seconds away from each other and sharing athletes is pretty much a perfect recipe for rivalry and drama:rolleyes:

I made a friend on Pro athletics senior 3 in athletic in Rhode Island. Our teams talked to each other, and encouraged each other. After awards, we placed higher than them and this girl came up to me and hugged me and said congrats. I made a good friend and I adore the sportsmanship that occurs when 2 teams come together. That's what a "rivalry" should be :)

Yep that's exactly how it is at our gym. There are 4 gyms within 20 minutes of each other and 2 school districts. Just 2 weekends ago there was an Instagram "discussion" between 2 of the rival gyms. The cheer world is indeed a very small world.

I feel like ECE J5 and WC Starlites are somewhat of a friendly, fun rivalry. I'm not from either gym but I know they compete against each other a lot throughout the season and I feel like they enjoy competing against each other since each team pushes the other to try to be better.

It's funny to see how through the course of the years, rivalries adapt and change.
OC Black and PCM Fantasy was one of THE most intense rivalries I've ever seen.
Both locations had a small senior and were literally 15 minutes away from another, AND all the girls went to high school together.
Now, they're all friends.
TG and Cali Coed was an intense one. Just listen to the music. haha.

My favorite all time rivalry has to be Georgia vs. Spirit Of Texas in Jr. Coed 5

2006 Spirit of Texas Arlington, TX
2005 Georgia All-Stars Marietta, GA
2004 Georgia All-Stars Marietta, GA
2003 Spirit of Texas Arlington, TX
2002 Spirit of Texas Arlington, TX
2001 Georgia All-Stars Marietta, GA
2000 Georgia All-Stars Marietta, GA
2000 Spirit of Texas Arlington, TX

Sounds like a South Florida thing? Maybe even St Lucie, Martin, Palm County thing?!
