I think the fold up lunch table idea really has some teeth
I think it is possible but with schools you are still going to run into the issues of damaging the floor. Springs scratch bottom surfaces i.e. waxed basketball courts. This is one of the main reasons that stages are set up or as you see carpet rolled out underneath. I'd love to see a simple spring floor just like I'm sure any EP would LOVE. It comes down to cost, I just don't see the cost working out, but good luck!

Why can't there be feet underneath the springs? Covering an entire floor for just the footprint of the spring I don't think would be necessary.

doesnt even have to be feet underneath the springs just put a plastic/rubber surface which will protect the floor and provide grip stopping the track/floor moving

so you have a sandwich layer 1 (lies on ground and folds into the middle) - rubber/plastic

layer 2 - springs

layer 3 - wood/mdf with or without mat attached

it would also prevent damage to the springs, we have a track here that gets taken apart and put away every week and we have lost a few springs

i like the flexi roll idea though, i could see it working if it was small strips which had edges that overlapped/interlocked but had an elastic core running along the whole strip so like tent poles work with the elastic allowing them to be folded up but "ping" into place when straightened out ... you could easily roll it out and roll it away.
could be heavy but then you could look to use a strong plastic instead of wood

What about this system? Foam Block Spring Floor

Im pretty sure that one of my competitions in vegas last year was on a air floor. My tumbling felt very strange and I remember almost eating mat on jumps to back because the floor suddenly turned to mush when I tucked. It wasnt until after that one of the coaches told us that it was an air floor and asked if it felt strange.......

Not a fan of the air floor idea. A compatible sprung floor like the hinge idea would be more ideal.

I'm not sure if this would fold up as tight as those fences if there were springs attached, also it'd be quite tall/wide as it would only fold in 1 direction but it could be lighter if something other than wood could cover it, if you had a free wall and could get permission you could maybe attach one side to a wall and the just pull it out like pulling out a sofa bed, although I guess most people want a portable one. :(
my teams issue is we have a sprung floor but it's the one from the London Olympics so the gym owner promptly banned us from wearing trainers to protect it (he cleans it by hand he's that protective although I can see why) so we no longer stunt in trainers apart from on a small area of none sprung floor one stunt group at a time. but it's such an amazing gym nowhere else could compare so we're stuck :(

I was imagining 9 6 foot wide sections that expanded to 42 that could attach side to side.

I would imagine that unexpanded it would be about 7ish by 8 each section and if made light enough they could be stacked.

you would either need wood or a hard bottom to the flexiroll mat to have a smooth feeling to the floor.

now if we could get it to fold up to about 5 ft then it wouldn't take up significantly more room than a rolled up mat laying down

it could probably also be set up permanently much like the expandable bleachers and could just hydraulically extend from a wall and be set up quickly and easily

How long does it take to set up a normal competition floor (working at a decently brisk pace)?

It has to be portable and setupable in 5 minutes or less.

apologies for taking this a little OT but we had a similar problem, our solution was for the kids to keep their trainers in the gym in lockers and for them NEVER to be worn outside. Even all the gym coaches have 'gym shoes' that they keep and wear inside the gym only.
