I figured we should probably start a thread for this, as I'm sure that since the majority of gyms who attend Worlds get shirts, that the majority of teams attending The Summit will also get shirts.

Post away

Stingrays Platinum (obviously not my team but they are adorable!)

The company we ordered bows from said they could no longer use the work the summit has anyone else had this happen?

sparkle555. Yes.. Varsity has trademarked "The cheerleading worlds" and "the summit" so they cannot be reproduced without copyright infringement. This is a very recent development.

I just emailed the owner of my gym and we caught it in time because we haven't finalized our design yet.. but I can't see how they can punish gyms that already have the shirts done, at time of production it wasn't an issue.

Ex post facto :D

From my understanding, the phrase "The Summit" is actually a registered trademark of Bayer Properties, LLC, a property company. You cannot copyright a word. Words have to be trademarked. Only works of art, music, photos, etc. can be copyrighted. This can be found by a simple search on the Internet. We make bows and had an EP contact us regarding a "named competition" bow and asked us to stop selling it, which we did. I would like to get in touch with the bow company to see exactly how they were approached about this so called "infringement". I think it's time us little companies to stop getting bullied! Let us make these cheerleaders happy and allow them to have something that shows how proud they are for having accomplished something so great! Oh, and by the way, check out our instagram for a picture of a Summit bow we made! platinumcheergear :)

I just can't understand why they are now blocking the use of WORLDS and SUMMIT. I wouldn't think that this would be an issue for them, as the cheer gyms nor the bow companies are not taking away any business from them. They may be making money through the use of these words, but for the most part, these teams either sell the tees right around cost or sell as fundraisers. Every year they sell out of Worlds apparel and I don't see that changing anytime soon by the individual gyms selling commemorative Worlds shirts that represent their gym and their teams. They are actually publicizing these events and letting the world know that their gym and their teams made it to Worlds/The Summit that year. I understand that Disney/Mickey is copyrighted, but a word or the mention of the event seems very petty. Just my opinion, though.

My attorney has done the research and they have the legal right to do this but just have let us all do this for years. Why they are cracking down now, I don't know but it is their right to do so. Summit is Trademarked for different industries. I looked in the database. I am surprised Disney has not come after all of us for the "Ears". I am complying and not selling these products.
